Any lens can be used for night shot if you know how to expose properly
For a start, you can try with your kit lens first...from there on you will learn what is the limitation and what you should look for for your next lens ![]() Night scene....boat quay and explanade area are my fav |

Withs flash, most of the lenses can do the job. But if you're talking about avail light phototgraphy, then you'd have to look at the large aperture lenses. Cheap options would be the 50mm f1.8, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.8, etc... The others are much more expensive, like 50mm f1.2, 85mm f1.4... Need a lil practise with them too... ![]() |

unless you use rear curtain flash or you know what or you know what you're doing, using a flash is gonna wipe out the background. you don't seem to have a clear concept of ngiht photography, going by the posts so far.

Selection of lens regardless of time of day is dependant on the focal length that is required. What subject are you shooting? What image are you creating, wide, normal, tele?

I'd advise that you practise shooting with your flash to understand how it works together at night.
It won't help you capture the background. It would only enable you to capture your subjects and illuminate them sufficiently. How you expose the BG in terms of aperture, shutter speed and ISO is another matter. |

A good steady hands are needed if no tripod is use, as you may need to go down to 1/2 sec. and not forgetting setting the flash to rear curtain sync.![]() Happy Hallowing... |

Use flash, good DSLR with high ISO performances and F/2.8 lenses.

Actually any of the Nikon cameras with the kit lens can work well with a balanced fill flash.
