My brother got interested in photography so thinking of buy him one used olympus set ( body + one len ) . Not sure which one to buy for him .
1)Used E-1 or E510. Currently , I am using E510 + 14-54 mm . I am more interested in E-1 as I can try the E-1 but is it adviseable to buy something " outdated " body ???? can someone provide more information so I can make better decision . ![]() |

E510 will be a more advance body, built is definitely out. your bro is new to photography? if yes then I will advise on E510. since u already have E510, y dun u pass it to your Bro and u upgrade to E3?

Ok. It all depends, really. I recommend the E1 for the veterans, E510 for the newbies. I still find it easier to access stuff from the main LCD, whatever the vets say about the top LCD. The E5xx are also lighter. Larger screens. IS. Etc etc. Great for beginners who would shoot handheld on full auto and expect results.
But once you're willing to slow down and get down to basics, shooting from a tripod, and ignoring the MP counts and noise, the E1 is still quite the workhorse. Much as I love the E1, I'd say get the E5xx. It's less intimidating =p Or pass your E5xx over, and get the E1. haha BTW...don't forget the dpreview discussion: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...hread=29668553 Last edited by Kirika; 16th October 2008 at 01:29 AM. |

If I pass my E510 to my brother , I use the E1 .would it be some kind of “down grade “ . People usually upgrade where I go the other way . Got this strange feeling . Don’t know whether is a good move??? |

You give advance dslr to someone who just started photography and he will either give up, overwhelmed by the settings, or stick to p-mode and complain camera not good when cannot get the shot he want. So what is your brother's level?

cons: downgrade in resolution lose built-in IS and liveview pros: likely to upgrade in skill / technique with the limitations of ISO and lack of IS E1's colour output rugged camera body best egronomically designed body almost silent shutter release

I think the E-1's AF speed might kill you.

As good as the E1 is (or was for that matter), you'll probably be disappointed with the image quality seeing that you're using the E510 currently.
I suggest you get him the E520 for the fact that the IS will be very benificial for new users and the image quality is very good for that price point.

Having played with both the E1 and E510, I find that using the E1 forces me to really consider my shots. If you're a casual shooter, the E510 can take shots in just about any situation short of heavy rain. But for the E1, I knew that I could not rely on IS or cropping to get the shots, so I find myself using it a lot when I want to slow down. Less reliance on technological aids like IS, LV and zooming in (both from LV and smaller LCD), but yeah...not for casual shooters =p As a veteran, you might be quite ok with it, I guess.
