for ANY lens, if it does not have the "IS" designation, there isn't.
there are some primes with IS, but the 50 1.8 isn't one of them. the 200Lf2IS is one of them and many of the longer primes come with IS variants.

No lens can take sharp images without you knowing how to.

Well said.
IS is good marketing especially for shorter focal length. Before IS came into the scene, sports photographers shoot with 600mm on film (and some even did it on manual focussing). Pictures i see from magazines are tact sharp those days. Nonetheless, modern technologies are making it easier for amatures to speed up the learning curve so they can post the beautiful images all over the web and continue in the bbb behavior. In the end, everyone is happy. So, these terms will continue to haunt us to upgrade, upgrade and upgrade. |

general rule of thumb for handhold shaking is that shaking is visible for shutter speeds slower than 1/focal length. For 50mm, this is 1/50s. You don't typically have to shoot at speeds that slow with large apertures possible with that lens. You can also use a higher ISO speed and in a really demanding situation, use a tripod.

although Nikon has a VR offering on their 105mm macro
http://imaging.nikon.com/products/im..._105mmf_28_if/ apparantly it only becomes effective from 3m to infinity - what's the point of using a macro lens at distances more than 3m? you'd think a macro lens is meant to be used at around 30cm ![]()
