Default Need advice in getting my first camera

    Hi all:

I am a newvbie trying to take up photography. I am planning to get a dslr camera and i am considering between D60 and D80. Can anyone advice me which is better? Is there a difference in these 2 cameras? Any limitation in terms of lens usage?
I have been trying to get a 2nd hand camera but alot of them are selling only the body but not the kit. which means i have to get my own lens at extra cost.

I have got only a budget of $700 or less.
Anyone can give me some advice??
    Is D70 better than D60??
Thanks for reading and your advices are greatly appreciated.

I ever seen 400D with L lens, the results is magazine-like pics.
For D60 and D80, most advice go for D80 as it considered mid-range dslr, with built-in auto focus motor. For D60, it has expeed processor system found only in higher ends nikon dslr like d700/d300, but no auto-focus motor.

D70 is at least 2 years plus body and has 6MP resolution. Good for newbie to learn basic skills and it is fast for its class, able shutter speed to 1/8000.

End of day, no perfect solution, but what u really want in a camera. Then go for it.

Just take note that D60 can only AF for lens with built-in motor.
D80 will be a good choice, if you can get a 2nd hand at a reasonable price and good condition.
However, $700 is really too tight a budget.
You can get a 2nd hand D70 body quite cheaply, but I don't think is worth it since it is quite
    an old camera.
Just get a D60 with kit lens and start shooting. Save up and upgrade slowly.

You can consider the up and coming brands like Sony and Pentax too.

My advice for you is to get a 2nd hand K100D with kit lens. Surely its within your budget.
    Let's get rolling :)

hi..thanks all for your reply.. hmmm.. if i were to choose between D80 and canon 400D which is the preferred one? hmmm...sorry but just a silly question.. what is AF? does it make a difference if i buy a D60 which has no AF function?

    af = autofocus.

meaning d40/d60 has some limitations to use lens without motor inside, unable af, need to manual focus.

400d and d80, both have their merits. Probably i go for 400d, think 2nd hand is cheaper

I agree... seems like 400D is cheaper..hmmm..maybe seniors who had used this camera can give me some feedbacks on both cameras.
Anything i need to take note when i am getting a 2nd hand camera??

There is a dedicated thread for owners of 400D here. Perhaps you'll get more info.

Maybe you want to read through the Canon and Nikon threads. Plenty of information there about the respective camera lines and models. Look for the sticky threads that describe the basics about the camera systems. In addition, the question which camera to take is asked every second day here. Browse through the Newbie section and you can read what others have said. This forum has plenty if information thanks to the contribution of many members. Use the search function for your questions.

You may also want to read this thread on why someone changed from canon to nikon. May be abit skewed because it was posted in the Nikon thread.

No. Go towards the Nikon their lenses are
Why do you think they have the term "trinity lenses" referring to the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200

I'd go for the D80 not because Im from Nikon but because its features were better and more advanced then the 400D. Any speaking by records the D80 sold more than the 400D. Why? Coz of it's greatness over the 400D and the lenses Nikon has.
Not to mention the more solid feel of the D80 over 400D.
    Pardon my English.

I've another thread in the newbie forum, something like asking for reviews on my first camera setup plan. I did quite a bit of homework to get there, so you might want to take a look. So far, comments I've received agrees that its a good beginner setup. Do note that I pretty much will agree to the Canon 400D. I do see myself going to shoot at 1600ISO.

There are many others who will favor the nikon bodies, especially Nikkor lenses. That'd be up to you. In my opinion, the body isn't that affective. You can even look at 350D or 20D? I think the lens counts more. Costs more too.
    Looking for Canon 100mm F2 USM :)

    Here we go again...

So Canon, Sony, Pentax and Olympus lenses aren't good? Have you heard, for instance, of the Canon f/4L trinity and f/2.8L trinity too?
