Hi Obewan,

Your pictures are great. The exposure is spot on, and your framing is first class. Kudos to all you other guys too, who's photos are in some of the other threads about this show.

Hope you guys can give me some tips, as I was dissapoined with my attempts.

I was there at the 5pm show, as my daughter Shahirah (your pic #14) was taking part. I was using a Canon 400D with a 70-200 f4 and a 430EX flash as fill. Most of my pics were too dark, and all except those were the models were standing still were blurred.
Example:

I mostly used program mode P on my camera. Looking at the EXIFs, most of the time the camera was choosing 1/40 to 1/60sec at F4. I guess this was why the pics taken of models walking would be blurred.
What shutter speed did you use to freeze motion like in your pic#4? Did you pan too?

I had the Flash Exposure Bracketing set at +1.0. Still my pics were to dark, but yours are perfectly exposed. Were you using a high ISO? Mine was set at ISO 100.

I briefly tried using shutter priority at 1/200, but then the pics came out almost black. I was sitting about 10m from the runway. Maybe I hadnt set my flash to high speed sync. Would that help?

My metering was set to Evaluative Metering. Is this the best or should I have used Centre Weighted or Partial?

I'm guessing I should have gone to Manual, F4 @ 1/200th Sec, metered off someones skin tone on stage and bumped up the ISO till I got a correct exposure, and let the Flash add a tiny bit of fill. Would that be more like the correct approach?

I'd love to here all your comments & hope you dont mind helping out a newbie

Kind Regards
Mick

Thx for your kind words, Mick.
I do have my share of blur pictures. These are just the better ones.

For Canon 400D, you can safely up your ISO between 800-1600.
That will make your pictures and surroundings look brighter.
The shutterspeed should also increase to at least 1/125 to prevent motion blur and handshake.
