Default Need help from CS Audiophiles!!!

My dad used to be an audiophile years back and he has set up his own hi-fi set but recently (after more than 2 decades), the CD player component of the setup gave up and is spoilt.

Its a MISSION DAD 5 Compact Disc Player , british made. When we put in a cd (cleaned one, no scratches and stuff), the player made alot of spinning noise and refuses to read the cd.

Does anybody know WHERE to fix this player in Adelphi or any other places? Also, does anybody know where to get a replacement in Singapore?

Really hope to get it fixed ASAP as i'm dying to listen to some new CDs on that hi-fi instead of some crummy player.

    THanks!!!

May be you can try Audiophile Triangle @ B1 Adelphi and look for Allen the owner. It's a second hand dealer. He helped me repair my Classe CA100 Power Amp once.
    His contact HP 96745593.

Hope you can get the CD player repaired. It's a good player and nowadays they don't make
them what it used to be.

I used to have a MISSION Cyrus One Amplifier and a pair of speakers.
Good starters for getting into hifi.

How are his charges? Just called him and didn't get any quote for prices even though he said the player requires a lens replacement.

Well i'm still open for more suggestions!

My dad using Rogers speaker to go with it by the way, damn good for listening jazz. Haha, I'm not a hardcore audiophile myself, but i'm keen enough to listen to whats good or not. Just dun know how to set up a hi-fi set myself.

    Bro
Try Asia Sound for agent repairs, but Memory Lane is a good place for out of warranty items.

If it costs >100, get a new player

I manage to find a Mission distributor in Singapore...its Parcity, 1st floor shop in Sim Lim. Called them and ask if they do repairs. The guy told me to send an email with details to them and they will check with the factory if there are any parts left. If not i'll try memory lane.

I have to agree with your idea that if it cost more them $100 then it makes sense to get a new player. .... A good player that is.

I think you have to keep in mind that it is a 20 YEARS OLD CD player. Back in its day, the technology that went into it was considers state of the art and only the most premium tech or material is put into producing the player. By today's standards...it has for certain been surpassed by even the modest of say a Sony CD player.

There are certain hi-end audio equipment that will last a long time and even sound better with age like speakers..etc But with age comes deterioration that may not possibly see spares being able to replace the original part. There are shops that specialize in that but what happen most of the time is trying to use modern equivalent to make it with work with older input circuitry or they have salvage old parts that are still working and they will sell you those parts to replace your worn out or broken parts.

I played with some of these well known brands and/or have kept up with them in my earlier years working with people in the recording industry doing music , audio ads and other audio visual stuff. And I can tell you that just because it can be a well known brand..it does not always means they make everything good from speakers to amp to CD players to turntable..etc. And also just because it is well made and was the best of it's kind...they were still not meant to be good forever. As technology moves forwards...just like what tech you drool over on the D3 or Mark III dslrs....you will soon find them in basic entry level dslrs in a few years time.

What I am saying is...the CD player you have has seens it's better days. It is hard to justify over paying replacement or repair cost to bring it back to life unless it is for sentimental reasons. Just something to think about.

Marantz is an afforable brand and is well priced in SG. You can get the SA 8003 SACD player for under 1k and it will be quite a revelation, like cleaning off the cobwebs off your CDs.

I am a fan of this brand and own the SA 7001 KI Signature.

    Cheers

Get a new one. Forget abt repairing it
Having expensive gears do not make you a better photographer. Period.

    Thks for all the suggestions!

About getting a new CD player...my dad has his reasons for wanting to repair and use the current one. Why? He spent almost 2 years listening to various set-ups and have bought and sold many equiment over the years to find a combination that he likes within his then budget.

I'm not sure what is the definition of audiophiles, but my dad has custom made his wires and resolder the connection bits to the hi-fi set...(basically zhnged the whole thing) and he feels that if he gets another player, it might not "fit in".

Of course if the replacement fee is high, I'm pretty sure my dad will consider another CD player instead. A noob question...how much is a decent SACD-supported CD player? Cause i realize alot of "high-end" cds in the market are SACD and it would be nice to be able to play those CDs at the "SACD" quality.

If you are near YCK, both you and your dad can listen to my system and get an idea of a Marantz based system
    PM me for my address

I agree with your dad. Some of the older CD players, especially those British-made ones, sounded much better than most newer CD/SACD/DVD-A players. What's more, they are really UK MADE, not designed in UK and assembled in China, which most British-brand players are now.

Tell him to look for Adrian Chan of Memory Lane at The Adelphi #B1-11. HP: 92281304. His charges are reasonable.

I believe it is just a worn-out lens mechanism. If your father is good with his hands, he can actually replaces it himself. Just remove the existing lens mechanism from his Mission and bring it to Yoel Trading at Sim Lim Tower #03-19. Look for Jean Foo. She will help him find the matching component.

PS: After doing a Google search, it is confirmed that the Mission DAD 5 uses a Philips CDM 4 lens mechanism; which is good news. This lens mechanism is very easy to replace and it costs less than S$20.

Thanks all for the replies and pete's invitation to check out your system

My dad was fiddling with the cd player just now and guess wat? It worked!!!

What he did was to plug out the DA wire and put it back in and it worked...somehow didn't make any sense. How come an external wire will cause the player to not read the CD???

Anyway, I'm not an audiophile who knows the insides of an audio system but knows how to listen an appreciate a good system and music. So, i'll seriously consider petetherock's offer (dad's interested too!).

Only thing is somehow during soft passages, some low static noise can be heard...dad says the wires and connectors are not clean.

    Sorry for the late reply.
Glad that your player is working again.

I have been through many setups over the years.
Now. I am back to a basic setup.

    Speaker: Totem Acoustic Arro
CD Player: Blue Note Koala Tube
Amp: Leben CS-300 Integrated (Tube based)

I have stopped chasing after audiophile equipment.
It is all about the music now.
Only the music, your dad would understand.

And of course, there is photography.

"Only the music my dad will understand?" LoL...i'm the most musically inclined family member amongst my family, naturally i would also understand the music as well.

Yep, my dad is the one introducing me to photography too. Inherited his Nikon FE2 to shoot slides and BnW now.

By the way, cool Hi-fi setup...dun really know the parts but looks quite power...
