Default Arowana Feeding at The Zoo

Taken a while ago at the Singapore Zoo. Quite amazing to watch how they can jump out of water to catch their prey.

WOW TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!

May I know what time is their feeding? Is this new? I seems to miss this though I frequent the zoo a lot.

This will be my next outing's aim!

Thanks nik34, raptor84, and mug 326 for your comments.

You do need a very high shutter speed to freeze the action, e.g. 1/500. You also need a tele lens to fill the frame.

I also chanced upon this feeding. Not quite sure the exact timing either. I find they usually feed Arowana just before feeding the Orang Utan, which is the main draw for tourists. Very few people pay attention to the Arowana feeding. From the zoo map, the area is the Boardwalk Free Ranging Orang Utan, near the Animal Photography and Ride Booth. Hope this helps.

wow!

can really see the action happening in those shots! nice!

pity, the little droplets of water are kinda distracting though (the tiny, harshly lit specks not the larger, irregular blobs) ... but can't really prevent that right?

hmm, i think the water droplets adds to the effect of the arowana jumping out of the water..?maybe worst come to worst just PS the droplets to make it less bright if it is a distraction ba...but for me, i think its great like tt...

anyway..i think one reason why a lot of ppl miss the arowana feeding is cause it coincides with/or starts too early after the white tiger or hippo feeding...ppl who go to the white tiger feeding will naturally go to the hippo feeding cause no.1, the guides announces that he is going over to feed the hippo, and no.2, its the next animal after the white tiger. by then it will be too late to go over to the arowana feeding..

the last time i saw the feeding, they didnt' make the arowana leap out so high ....i think it was only on the surface of the water...they allow ppl to "feed" the arowana, but yeah, the food just placed just above the water surface...and u just hear a very loud and low tonned sound, with water splashing...
haha

great shots man!!

Thank you all for your compliments. Personally, I find the droplets are fine, so long they don't obscure the subject too much. The failure rate for these shots are very high. There are only a handful that I think good enough to show. Btw, I have the zoo year pass, so I can always go back and try again
