Tough choice cos each of the brand have some good stuff....
I love the 11-16mm f2.8 Toks and the 105mm or 150mm Sigs macros..... But I gave it to Sigma in the end for the variety of lenses they have.....

Sigma all the way for me. two thumbs up for the build quality, range, and excellent service standard. but the downside would be the matted coating on their lenses, that PEEEEELS! :l

Love them all, I bought 1 lens from each of the 3 brands.
They are good at focal length / purpose that I bought them for and it's value for $ too. Anyway, I vote for Sigma as it has lenses for every occasion.

I think they all have different strengths, according to what you are looking for, which is why brand preference can sometimes blind you from making the choice that works best.
Take for instance the ultrawide department. According to your needs, you'd pick the correct lens from a myriad of varieties from Tokina, Sigma, Tamron, and the original manufacturers. So for instance, you need a fast lens because your primary usage of a ultrawide lens is in events where lighting is poor, then the Tokina 11-16 comes to mind. Then let's say a large aperture is not important, but you want an ultrawide that goes all the way wide, even on full-frame, you'd wanna pick the Sigma 12-24, because it is a full-frame compatible lens. Purpose over brand preference for me, as well as most of the more discerning market, I'm sure. |

Tough choice for me. I've got the Tokina 12-24mm, the Sigma 30mm and the Tamron 17-50mm. Its probably a toss-up between Tokina and Sigma. Went for Tokina in the end, cause the 12-24 is my longest serving lens so far.

I have the new Sigma 120-400 as my 2nd lens.
I plan to get a UWA very soon for my year-end holidays down under . Contemplating either a Sigma or Tokina 11-16. I am leaning towards the latter following its good review @ KenRockwell.Last edited by FireRawkz; 10th October 2008 at 05:57 PM. |

my 70-200 is peeling like the dickens too.
should i buff the 'EX' coating off? Just wondering whether the material beneath the coating can stand up to the elements and (unintentional) torture... ![]() Last edited by Daedalus Trent; 11th October 2008 at 09:44 AM. |

I remembered that sigma also has more lemons compared to other brands.
Is this true now?

![]() Not entirely. Every brand will have its lemons. Some Tamron 17-50 users get backfocusing sets, for instance. |

I don't really favor any particular 3rd party brand. I like to view it has having more choices. I evaluate each manufacturer's product and select the best.
For instance, I prefer Sigma's 10-20mm over its competition and Tamron's 17-50mm over its rivals. Guess that puts me on the fence eh? |

![]() I guess the fact that we all use 3rd-party lenses proves that we aren't brand-loyalists and care more about performance/cost ![]() |
