Default Recommendations video card for HD video.

Hi all,

Possibles to recommend any HD video card?

Cos getting to build a desktop for it. Checked and google it, price range quite big, from $100 to $1000 also have, and due to computer idiot like me, an unsure of what shd i look out for etc.

Video card goes with ram? Or 2 gigs ram enough? I heard that video card that draws power by itself better.

Am using a HD video cam, so wanna make the best out of it.

Regards

Hi fotoudavid. What editing software are you planning to use? Video card is normally not that important for video editing. Just get anything reasonable. There are some exceptions though:

Sony Vegas with Magic Bullet plugin uses video card GPU for hardware acceleration of playback and rendering. (Without Magic Bullet, card does not affect rendering speeds or playback smoothness.) The Red Giant website has recommendations for graphics cards for Magic Bullet.

Grass Valley Edius V5 uses GPU for hardware acceleration. Check the Grass Valley site for more info.

Hi jaegersing,

Thks alot. Am using vegas, so the magic thing is a must right? Will source for it soon. Loks like Nvidia must get.

While building, what are the things to take note? Like Ram? Planning to get a 300g harddisk.

Magic Bullet is not really a must have for video editing. Vegas can do everything you need already, without having to buy plugins or special graphics cards. But MB can help you achieve a special look for your video that is very convenient, and it is worth buying if you find you like the effect.

You can download a demo version of Magic Bullet Looks to check it out.

And here is some info about suitable graphics cards

Regarding building a PC for Vegas, there is nothing specific that Vegas needs. 2GB RAM is worth having, but there is no consensus on whether more than that is useful. Make sure that you use separate hard disks for your operating system and your video projects. 300GB project drive is a good start, but with video you will sure run out of space unless you also think about backups and archives.
