While the SHG lens are all very nice, I just cannot justify spending that kind of money. Moreover, the 14-35 while being a very nice constant f/2 lens do not provide the focal lengths I'm looking for which the 12-60 does.

while I would love my lenses to be all HG lenses, it really depends on the range for me. For eg, I was ready to buy 11-22mm, but then heard about the 9-18mm, which makes more sense for me to get instead.

As amateur who is not really thinking to go pro, that kind of investment is too high. may be will do if there is a windfall like winning toto 1 million dollar but otherwise, HG will keep me happy already.

For me, the biggest drawback is weight. While I have owned almost all the SHG lenses, the weight issue is something that I cannot deal with. Funny thing is, most of my paying jobs are those shot with HG lenses and the SHG I owned are mainly for leisure, and therefore, I might consider getting the 14-35mm f2.0 down the road when I get another overseas gig. Currently I don't see myself having a need to get any SHG lenses for work. The new 9-18mm, on the other hand, is a more affordable lens that I can afford to "abuse" a little.

I think the question to ask is what SHG lenes can give that we can't make out from HG lenes?

The biggest drawback for me is the price. The pricetag alone is enough for you to look for alternatives elsewhere.

But my friend, the quality is to die for... and considering that you have to pay even more money to buy German lenses of this calibre, the SHG are really.... cheap.

I will have 1 or 2 SHG lenses in a short time, since I sold my house and will have some money to spend.
I believe that the lenses are worth the money, but they're not for someone who is only a hobbyist. The 14-35mm and 35-100mm are of the most interest to me, but of course, the 90-250mm or 300mm are incredible lenses. I was a person who normally used some prime lenses with film so it's not been easy to transition to what I consider to be slow zoom (f/2.8 and above) lenses. f/2.0 isn't perfect but it's reasonably brighter and I can hope for acceptable results. I've been wanting the 14-35mm since I saw it on the 2005 lens roadmap, so that will likely be my first but it could easily be the 35-100mm for small music performances.

I would recommend that you start with 14-35mm and then the 35-100mm. The latter is a pretty heavy lens to lug around (though you will get used to it after a while) and this is a great lens to use. Personally, I don't think I will ever go back to primes because of the optics of Zuiko Digital lens, and with SHG lenses, you won't too... I am quite sure of that. A lot of f1.2-1.8 primes are a let down these days. And those that are good are out of the "affordable" range (Leicas and Zeiss).

SHG are both too heavy and too expensive for my needs. I am affraid if I'd buy them I'd never use them because of weight. I also feel I haven't exceeded the capacity of my lenses yet. When I become a better photographer than my gear lets me to be I will buy them, but for now I am happy with what I have.

my long term plan: ZD7-14/f4 + ZD14-35/f2 + ZD35-100/f2 + Panaleica 25/f1.4
it will take me several years to collect this, but i figure it wouldn't be any fun to get them all too quickly ![]()
