Monochrome Effect in Photoshop

Recently I came across a particular photo in a magazine and I really like the color tone and the way it was taken. However, I do not know what kind of photography genre this style of photo falls into except that it is some kind of monochrome effect added to it. I would really like to know if there is any Photoshop editing technique that can produce similar effects or is there a specific resource where I can study such a style of photography.
