Dutch league is ^&%* league la... as long as u in good team like AJAX and PSV, u will score tons. The really top dutch players all play in Spanish/italian league by the time they hit 21++.

I was very surprised that Baros scored so few goals... maybe most of his goals are in CL and UEFA..

he's not a waste of $$$ nor is he a terrible signing...we could be out of the CL if he didnt score the only goal...CL means lotsa $$$,so he definitely is not a waste of $$$...he is also not a terible signing coz he played his part in creating goals during some,if not many,games...i agree he is not a prolific striker...but he is a good good team player...

no doubt initially he was signed to score goals for us, but sadly he could not reproduce the same kind of feat he had done in the Dutch league. The good thing is, Kuyt has other strengths in him. And Rafa has been able to make use of that very well.

That strength of Kuyt is his incredible ability to chase down every ball and run the whole entire 90 minutes or 120 minutes when needed. He is just like an Energizer bunny or Golden Retriever as some has fondly named him. His good attitude is also another positive trait that has perhaps brought about a good influence to the team as well.

I think some credit has to be given to Rafa for being able to integrate the goal-shy Kuyt into the team, so that he could contribute in other areas which are just important to the game as well.

Skrtel to be back in action by Christmas

Liverpool have revealed defender Martin Skrtel does not need an operation on his right knee and should return to action by Christmas.

The Slovakian centre-back damaged his posterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's 3-2 win at Manchester City and had a scan this afternoon.

Reds spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Martin was examined by a specialist today, who confirmed the player does not require surgery and is expected to be back playing by Christmas.''

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will undoubtedly be buoyed by the news although he is confident the likes of Sami Hyypia and Daniel Agger can fill the breach adequately.

"Everyone can see that the understanding between Martin and Carra is becoming really good,'' Benitez told the club's website, Liverpoolfc.tv.

"To lose a player who is doing well is always a problem. It's bad news, but we have other options.

"Martin has learned a lot. He already had good qualities and potential when we decided to bring him here.

"We had a lot of confidence in him but you can always improve, especially playing alongside experienced players and working under the staff here. He has done that.

"He has given me a selection headache this season but that is a good problem for me as a manager.''

Agger, 23, insists he will seize his chance to shine.

The Dane has been a peripheral figure at Anfield so far this season and is yet to figure in the Barclays Premier League, with Skrtel and Carragher preferred by Benitez.

But the Denmark international has vowed to make the most of his team-mate's misfortune.

"Of course I hope to get some playing time, but this is not exactly the way I wished to get it.

"I know Martin very well because I share a room with him when we travel,'' said Agger.

"I hope to get my chance and then I will prove that it's my place.

"On the other hand, it might as well be (Jamie) Carragher's place because I don't know why people only say it is me or Skrtel who are fighting each other for a place in the team.

"I have had to be patient this season and wait for my chance, I know how things are.

"The team have been playing really well and the results have been great, so I couldn't really expect the manager to make too many changes.

"The only thing for me to do was get my head down and concentrate on getting as fit as possible, so that if an opportunity came along, I was ready to take it.''

No doubt about his commitment and attitude. If only he can do something about his rugby kick. It is just too bad that so many loose balls seems to land at his feet.

Lucky it is not so serious. But I expect Agger will do just as well in his place.

    BENITEZ WAITS ON NEW DEAL

Yesterday, the papers were intent on getting Carlos Tevez a permanent (and very lucrative - hey, credit crunch or no credit crunch, a player has got to have a signing-on fee, hasn't he?) deal. Now it's the turn of Rafa Benitez.

Just about every paper carries a story announcing - with a faint hint of hysteria - that the Liverpool boss is still yet to be offered a new deal despite his present contract expiring in 18 months' time. The Daily Express carries a few quotes from Benitez saying he is not particularly bothered but, as a collective force, the news is bound to ratchet up the pressure on owners Hicks and Gillett to make Rafa an offer he can't refuse - especially now that Liverpool are top of the table and especially as The Sun reckons he is being lined up by Juventus as Claudio Ranieri's successor.

'Reports in Italy insist the Turin club will try to tempt Benitez from Anfield in the New Year unless there is a sharp about-turn in results,' it announces on its backpage.

'And that has heightened the pressure on Tom Hicks and George Gillett to offer the Kop boss a new contract or risk him being tempted by a bumper offer from Italy.

'Hicks insisted SEVEN months ago he wanted to extend Benitez's contract by another year on top of the 18 months remaining on his current deal. Yet there are growing fears the co-owner was merely paying lip service to the situation, as he went on a charm offensive after the Americans' stock hit rock-bottom with fans.'

Benitez himself isn't saying much, other than that a new deal would be useful: "The problem in England now is that everyone wants to be successful too soon. It is a part of the game I don't like and I would prefer to have a long-term contract so I can have a long-term plan."

RIERA LOOKS TO MAKE UP FOR LOST TIME

Albert Riera is determined to make the most of his latest call-up to the Spain squad after the agony of missing out on this summer's European Championship success.

Riera was summoned by new Spain boss Vicente del Bosque on Tuesday as an injury replacement for fellow left winger Diego Capel ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifying double-header against Estonia and Belgium.

The 26-year-old, who swapped Espanyol for Liverpool this summer, earned his first selection for Spain almost exactly a year ago when former coach Luis Aragones included him in his squad for the matches against Denmark and Iceland.

The Mallorca-born winger then scored a thunderbolt on his debut against the Danes and remained a part of Aragones' plans right up until the veteran coach named his final 23-man squad for the European Championships, when uncapped duo Santi Cazorla and Sergio Garcia were included but Riera was omitted.

Riera then had to watch on as Spain swept all aside them in Austria and Switzerland to land their first major trophy in 44 years.

The former Bordeaux and Manchester City winger is keen not to wallow in past disappointments though, and now he is hoping to make the most of this chance to impress new Spain chief Del Bosque.

"They called me yesterday and I came as soon as I could because to be called up to the national team is a reason to be happy and enthusiastic," said Riera, whose last appearance for Spain came in March's friendly win over Italy.

"I was angry not to be in the European Championship squad because I was convinced that they were going to have a great competition, but to feel sorry for yourself and look to the past doesn't do any good and now I have to try to be in the next tournament."

Spain will be looking to continue their 100% record in Group Five over the next week, which will see them face Estonia in Tallinn on Saturday and then travel to Brussels to face Belgium the following Wednesday.

In their opening two World Cup qualifiers at home, Spain beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 and Armenia 4-0 to move to the top of the standings, two points clear of nearest challengers Turkey and Belgium.
