Free?
Most likely they'll give you stuff that's next to useless. Or ask you to fork out $$$ to trade up to a better model of tripod/memory card, whatever.

The 'free' tripods, which are never really 'free' to begin with, are usually only good for the smallest and lightest P&S.

But the cheapo tripods, they will tell you it's worth $50+. But that's probably recommended retail price. To the seller, maybe it's worth like 10 bucks. Don't you realise that one of the oldest tricks in the book is to use the two words "FREE GIFTS" to hook suc..I mean, buyers? I guess if you really want these freebies, you can really walk into any shop in S'pore and just declare that you want lots and lots of free gifts. I am sure many of them will oblige. Just note that nothing, especially from a business point of view, is really "free".

Better off buying good accessories yourself than to incur unnecessary cost for useless freebies

I once bought a newly launched camera at the exhibition, who represented canon. At regular joints, the camera unit cost only 2.2k. The exhibition price was 2799. I then factor in the $100 taka voucher (which they gave only $60, my mistake as i didnt check), the free umbrellas, the hp straps, the keychains, the lensbook, the kit lens, camera bag, starter kit, etc etc, it came to about the same price at the other retail outlets. As i needed the camera, i bought from the exhibition 2hrs before closing. They threw in alot more useless freebies (pen, writing pads, umbrellas, keychains).
In the end, only the camera unit plus the taka voucher was useful. I did not regret my decision as i needed the camera and i cannot afford to be on the waiting list. So, unless there is an urgent need to get the camera and you cannot afford much time to shop, i say go look around and save the money towards a better lens in the future. If you want usuable tripod, go to carrefour or some film processing labs for some cheapo ones as a start. To use your money wisely, there is a price to pay and that price is your time and frustration of going everywhere to compare. |

Do you really need the free gifts?
![]() I would prefer a sturdy tripod that is able to hold the camera steady. I think the cleaning kit for FZ28, a lens pen from OP that cost around $10 would do the job. The LCD protector, there is a shop @ the top corner of SLS selling @ $1.50 that is intended for handphone. Otherwise, $2 from Daiso can do the job too. Compatible Battery can easily get from EastGear around $35. I believe the free 4GB SDHC from Panasonic would be sufficient for the start.
