I spent the whole afternoon playing with this lens on the 50D. I shoot RAW and JPEG as I was actually testing both the cam and lens. I'm satisfied with the overall quality but don't expect a "L" like sharpness and crispiness, which this lens lack off. But hey it's an 18-200! I would recommend this lens to anyone who is not too demanding and looking for an "one lens shoot everything" kinda people

Focusing wise is pretty snappy too. Sorry I don't have any pics to post because I'm too damn lazy la I'm sure soon there will be many samples available.

I had a go at the Vivocity this evening. Overall I found the focusing alot faster compared to some of the other lenses that I have used before especially the sigma 18-200. Maybe you guys want to give it a go at the showroom

The diff between camera body and with kit lens price is 900. So bet it's going to be 1000+ standalone. Maybe wait for people to offload them if they don't like it.

The set was on loan to me for testing purposes only. The list price for 50D body is $2099.

if it cost almost 1k, dont think it really worth it... a couple of hundred more can bring in 17-55

if 1k price quite close to Nikon 18-200. Think worth a go if you want an all-in-one travel lens.

Would be a gd pairing with 10-22mm......

But the 17-55IS targets a different user group; those who shoot a lot in low-light. Those who buy the 18-200IS want it for it's versatility

I tried the lens at Canon Vivocity showroom along with the spanking new 50D. Wow the LCD screen is marvelous with 'fading' effect between menus Ok regarding the lens... no time to check in detail but one thing I noticed was that the lens creeped when I pointed it down. I guess the front element is too heavy.

it was sold as a kit lens for 450D at $1999.
so one of the CSers supposed the lens to be sold at $900.

I guess it would be realistic to expect sub $1K street price for this lens...

I was looking forward to this lens for my coming trip to JiuZaiGou but more really nice 5DmkII photo samples are posted and for the first time, I'm convinced FF is the way to go and I think it's time to relook at 24-105mm f4...

Can't resist but nevermind the responses that followed but you don't sense any contradiction between those sentences?

After testing @ ViVo, I also quite surprise that this len w/o USM still can focus quite fast.

Tempting to buy with this kit len.

Also did a brief hands of the 50D + 18-200mm at the Canon Vivo showroom earlier.

Surprisingly this lens gives a fairly impressive performance nothwistanding its huge zoom range and 'cheap' build...the optics are fairly well above decent for such a 'budget' consumer superzoom...stop down a stop or two and the results are quite good....the AF is pretty fast too despite no USM....if the pricing is indeed sub 1k then this lens will probably be a winner in the 'compact all purpose travel lens' category. Seriously tempted to get one just for that purpose, and as an all purpose 'bring around' lens....if I don't go the FF upgrade route.

And yeah, I dun get why ppl wanna compare agaisnt EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS....both lenses serve different purposes...the 17-55mm more for low light applications becoz of its f2.8 aperture, while the 18-200mm is an all round general purpose superzoom.

sure will give them a try ...
is it heavy?
dun feel like want to lug my 17-85mm & 70-200L for travel ...
pairing with 10-22mm will be damn good!!
