Hmmm...new iPod Nano. Has some very cool new features. It's what I would go for.

    But let the Apple-bashing begin...

Apple is neither cheap nor it's good.

China brands (eg.: Aigo) are cheap. But are they good? I don't know...

Not cheap, but its amazing compared to all the other junk out there. Apple gets my vote anyday of the week.

Not if you value sound quality.

If you're going for a good mp3 player, lookout for one that has the Wolfson chipset. Think its some kind of sound processor (ADC) that produces really good sound. Some made in China brands have this providing very good value.

I just bought a Sandisk Sansa Clip, 2GB, $79 from Challenger 2 weeks back. Like it alots cozz it suits my needs. iPod Shuffle will be good choice if not for the fact that it lacks FM radio function and high price. Creative Stone looks rather OK, but I don't trust Creative MP3 stuff anymore.

Its true that the Apple players dont have the most fantastic sound out of the headphone jack

(doesnt bother me since i go LOD and amp, and since it offers lossless and 80GB at $380, why not?)

BUT, in terms of reliability, service and looks, gotta be one of the best around.

TS: You wont go wrong with sony players, although their prices are not what one would call low, for a good alternative, samsung players have a good reputation for reliability, the Sandisk players have received good review(havent tried them yet myself) and the expansion slots are definitely very damn useful!

Amen to that! Nothing beats a good headphone amp bypassing the crappy built in amp of the iPod.
Which one are you using? I'm using a Viper D2 and Mini3. Got my ear on the iQube but budget does not permit

thanks for all the replies guys!

I'm looking at the sansa fuze 4gb at 169 at challanger ( dads a member ) , the creative zen (no additional letters like M or anything ) at 155 or the samsung YP s3 at around 190 (forgot to check the price :/)

    pros (IMO):

fuze - so far no known issues , sound quality not bad (IMO)

zen - nice size , nice sound , cheapest (on offer)

samsung - reliable , (havent really checked out the sound quality so cant say anything in that regard ) , nice size and design

    cons :
fuze - a little small for my giant hands , not sure about the post-buy support , has a little pause when changing tracks ( can live with it mostly if i get it )

zen - many many issues , bad post-buy supported (heard) , might not be reliable (friend's one crashed 3 times in a year )

samsung - the touch screen is sensitive so have to lock when put in pocket , meaning hard to change volume , my big fingers might touch other buttons when I'm trying to press something

what are your comments on these players?
or are there any better models out there?
    thanks!

    *edit* just saw zune
anyone here knows where its available and the prices ? (looks not bad )
    thanks!

I have a problem with creative products. I've stopped buying them some years already but I found the physical quality to be plasticky and cheap feeling. My money will be on the Samsung or the Fuze. Sansa has a large market share in the states as well.

    Creative Zen X-Fi.

    http://www.creative.com/products/mp3/zenxfi/

The 8 gig version is $229. Exceed your budget by just $29.
The X-Fi is supposed to be their new sound technology. Sound quality is pretty good. Comes with in-ear earphones that sell separately for $70++. HAs built in radio.

Can see photos, watch movies etc. Downside is the video needs to be a specific format. Must download the converter. And it takes a bloody long time to convert.

Construction is so-so. The push buttons are ok, but the sliding on-off switch sucks.

But still good value for $$ overall.
