Newbie here.. any help would be great

I'm a newbie and find that prices of the Tamron seems a bit more affordable... I'm probably not gona be able to tell the differences in quality so I figured I start with messing with the Tamron 1st...... seems weird that the prices of these made in JAPAN LENS cost less then some of the kit VR Nikon lens made in China.... yes I guess it all comes down to branding?

A fren just lent me his D300 to mess around (I think his intentions is to get me sucked into this hobby!.. hahahaha).... and have 2 lens.. the Nikon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 VR lens and the Tamron XR DiII 2.8 17-50mm... I'm probably looking at D80 or 90

I tot it would be cool to be able the test out the lens.... any suggestions on some simple test to see the differences between the lens with out too much complex setting up?

So far I have basically tried the following setup for taking

Object about 50cm away
-MOUNTED & Hand held : Tamron at 17mm (can't seem to adjust to 18mm only 17mm or 19mm), Nikon at 18mm (VR off when mounted)

-MOUNTED & Hand held : Tamron at 50mm, Nikon at 50mm (VR off when mounted)

-Taken with auto ISO which seems to be 1600

-Manual ISO 200

So far I can only see
-Difference between hand held with VR off and on... big difference in hand shake.

-When mounted the Tamron seems sharper

-With the difference in ISO I get some kinda of difference in brightness of the picture

In simple terms... can any one tell me what other things I should be looking out for in the pictures? I know it kinda vague but I hope you all can do your best to let me know.

Or better yet does anyone know of any simple standard setup that I can try to see differences?... ie

- 2-3 different types of objects around each other? or a potted plant?
- 2 different fixed distance say 1/2m and 2m?
- Outdoor natural light or indoor bright and dim light?
- Auto ISO and fixed ISO (how would this actually effect the pics?)

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!
