24-70 has better optics. The 24-120 has better range. But optic wise, should lose out to the former

Not to mention that 24-70mm is f/2.8 lens and is therefore useful for low light pictures. The lens has much better bokeh too..

Only cons is that it is a bit heavy and is therefore not used by many as a walkaround lens.

Was considering to get 24-70 (equal 36-105 on D300 1.5X crop). SGD2k+.. Out of my budget..

Ask yourself what you shoot most. Then decide which lens suits your needs.
If I can afford a 24-70. I'll go for it. For the 24-120. I believe that if you want you achieve a better picture quality. You better zoom between 30-105 just to play safe.
Anyway, I did own an older 24-120 (sold already) before this AF-S version. I can frankly tell you that it's really sucks.

without a doubt 24-70 is way better than 24-120 especially in terms of IQ that why it is PRO grade...
