I have told them not to worry. Cos if really so dangerous, no one will stay in these budget places. Anyway, may I know is it advisable to leave my main bagpack in the budget hostel or hotel and carry a small bagpack with my camera and some cash to walk around?

    Thanks

Letting them the route is one thing but keep them updated as there might be change of plan along the way.

The cheapest way will be to email them. But hearing your voices through the phone will be priceless to them.

Hi, I was actually trying to ask the cheapest way to make a call back. By skype?, Handphone Autoroam? Or buy a handphone card from there and call back?

    Thanks

everyone in general....you would be hurt or anything but well...getting fleeced would be the main thing you get if not careful... that is what I mean by flash..as in don't flash your money about. Why look for trouble when trouble don't come knocking. You want to know who told me this? My own china staff in our China branch office! heheheh... They been trying to ask me to come over but I am never motivated to make the trip there.

Chance of something really dangerous happen is well rare...if you follow all the safety actions.

Handphone range and autoroaming might be abit freckle over there depending on where you are at. There are some very innovative chinese company selling those call-back cards with store value and card with numbers you can call using telephony technology ....they can be pretty cheap. Most of the modern towns would be fine but you might have to look into alternatives just in case for communication sake. Set up a fix time frame every other day or so...that you can get message out to your family at home. That is one way to ensure your family will not be too worried and it also will be easier for them to track your progress through out your trip.

Damn wish I could make a trip like this but since my mandarin is no existence...this kind of trip will really be lost to me communication wise but I know for a fact you and your D700 will be capture tons of great shots. How we get to see them when you get back.

Buy a mobile card there and get your folks to call you regularly on that number from here. IDD there cost an arm and a leg, use only when necessary.

RMB 100,000 is just above right for a 6 month back pack across the country. Don't expect luxury accomodation though. Bulk of expenses will be on travelling (train, taxis and occasional domestic flight) and decent food(you will need it).

People there are opportunistic. If you can get through 6 months without getting conned, you will have your place in the Guinnese records. Do be careful. It may be a good idea to open a bank account there and access your funds via ATM in different provinces.

Go for it! Wish I could afford the time to do the same thing, but unfortunately, no such luck.

You can apply for a 3 month visa here and then extend monthly there for a maximum total of 6 months (if I remember correctly). Overstaying leads to fines of RMB500 per day, according to stories I heard, not verified though.

For a 6 month stay, likely to cross different weather seasons, so pack and budget your clothing needs accordingly. Weather generally gets cooler as you move north and warmer as you move inland. Air-conditioning cold or warm can be sub-standard there, so be sure to have enough clothes to keep warm. Catching a cold is no small matter, and more than just irritating.

Some places, especially in the South like Yunnan and Guangdong, venturing out late at night may not be safe. Places like Hangzhou and Shanghai is ok and generally safe.

......will post when I can think of some more...

Hi, actually I will be just taking train and bus. Don't think it is that expensive.

As for ATM wise, I thought you can't access the ATM in other places except for the place where you set up your account. For example, if you set up a bank account in beijing, you can't access the atm(even though same bank name, but different branch) in say Yunnan?

Pls correct me if I am wrong. Thanks

My parents now damn objective of me going to places like tibet, Dunhuang, Yunnan and Chengdu after hearing what me relative from China says about how unsafe and poor are those places, since I am going there alone.

Now they along permit me to go to places where they have friends like Beijing, Shanghai, suzhou, hangzhou.

Very sian, wanted to have a ride on the Qingzang express from Lhasa to Beijing. But my China uncle say that I will not have enough oxygen to breathe. I thought the trains are pressurised with oxygen?

I told them that none of my friends want to go since they are more concern of working till the university starts its term in August. They say next time then go. I told them that,"look at my brother, now whole day working, where got time to go and see these places throughly"

Although they let me to go to major cities like Beijing, Shanghai and so, there are not much natural sceneries to see. Especially Jiu Zhai Gou. Where else can you find scenery that is close to it.

Even if next time got chance to go, the cost of going there might not be as cheap as now, and may be comparable to going to Europe.

Yea. And if got stangers, even a waitress in restauarant, ask you where you are from, just anyhow give them a country besides Singapore. Bascially, you can don't answer them.

Most of me and my colleague's reply to them is, Africa...Simply Joke and Laugh it off.

But sales people in Shenzhen, Luo Hu are pretty smart. You open your mouth and talk only, immediately they can guess... Haha.

Then they prepare the size of the carrot chopper accordingly.

Ya. Malaysia is one of the country we commonly used too. Say we are from Ulu Kampongs. Very poor.

And we ask those wearing new balance on their foot to quickly hide their foot away.
