You can have an idea how its IQ is like here:
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Ni...mm/page4.shtml Although this lens performs well against 3rd party lens of similar zoom range, there is nothing to shout about its sharpness. People who bought this lens value its versatility. To some, this could be the only lens they need for their travel. If you are fussy about sharpness, look elsewhere ![]() FYI i usually brought a 10-20mm and 50mm alongside 18-200mm for my overseas trips, but in the end the latter is used to cover >90% of the shots. But for event shooting, i would prefer a lens with wider aperture though. So it depends on what your needs are.

Hey man,
I bought an 18-200 2 weeks ago. So far I have absolutely nothing to complain about. The sharpness is good enough for me, and the versatility rocks. It's not too fantastic in low light situations, but for day shoots its great for walking about and shooting anything. Lizard Something I found in my garden. ![]() It's more for the versatility. But of course if you want a faster lens, a 70-200 f/2.8 is always..... more expensive.

the jack of all trades, master of none.
versatile. thats it, unless you shoot in ideal conditions all the time, sooner or later the IQ will get to you, and u will feel like changing again. unless all ur photos are always view at 640x480... |

.A sample of a low light shot done at an event for your reference. The quality looks usable enough for me though. 90mm 1/13s f/5.3 ISO 500 ![]() Just balance your ISO/Shutter Speed/Aperture well and make good use of the VR, you should be able to make some decent pictures. Another note about lenses with VR, do not snap the pictures too quickly just right after the VR kicks in. The VR is a control system that counteracts motion by adjusting the elements within the lens, it need a short time after starting up to "learn" your movement behaviour to effectively counteract the magnitude of your movements. Half press your shutter to focus and you'll hear the VR mechanism "click", indicating that it has come into action. Observe through the viewfinder and wait for the movements to settle down a little (around 2-3 seconds) before taking the shot.

You would probably buy this if you value the zoom range over IQ and build

If you don't look into your pictures that much and just do photography casually, the 18-200mm is more than enough to last you for quite a while. Some pros use the 18-200mm too. |

Very convenient zoom for travelling.
Couple the 18-200mm with a wide angle zoom like a 12-24mm and you can shoot and travel light. ( some add a 50mm prime for low light ) I actually bought an 18-200mm VR after I got my 70-200mm VR. You just have to understand why you are buying certain things. I did not lose sleep on the IQ for my copy. My advice is not to nit pick sharpness and brood too long. You can have sharp shots with this lens unless you somehow have zero tolerance for poor zoom IQ or a habit to pixel peep. Ryan Last edited by giantcanopy; 14th September 2008 at 08:24 AM. |

well if you talking abt capturing precious moments in an instant without losing it then this can be 1 of them since it does not require u to change lens....
The IQ is not as bad. There are many pics around been taken using this lens and I will said it still makes it great.....
