Default SB-600 pre-flash question

Was looking around the Nikon Imaging site and notice there's actually a pre-flash emitted when you use SB-600 in iTTL mode. I am using D80 with SB-600 but my flash doesn't emit a pre-flash when I press the shutter, the flash just fired once. So am I missing anything here?

Pre-flash description here.

It does actually... too fast for most of us to perceive...

But I noticed it only when it spooked my subject (a shade loving butterfly)

Oh... From my previous experience in Canon, the pre-flash is obvious until the people that I was taking picture of said "Weii~! You take liao ah?!" end up the pictures was the funny reaction from them.

Thanks anyways

I was on Automatic AF-S/AF-C (AF-A).. Does that affect the pre-flash?

Oh.. I remember it should be the focusing light emitted from the flash if I recall correctly.

if the preflash is fired u will see it when looking thru the viewfinder, just before the mirror slaps up. u will not see the actual flash in the vf as the sensor is exposed for the actual flash

You don't mean the modeling flash do you? I turned that off, can really scare people away if you press it accidentally. If I remember correctly, I've seen people using D200 with SB-800, the pre-flash is actually noticeable, or that pre-flash is a red eye reduction function?

I try to get if we are getting it right, or the flash is function what it should be.

Could you see if set to AF-S does the red beam light?

ADD: if we don't see anything maybe time to go NSC.

Thanks longkangman, I'll give it a try when I get a hold of my camera. Do you use SB-600 or SB-800? I wondering if the pre-flash really cannot be seen from the naked eye.

Can anyone verify on this?

if you set to slow sync/red eye and you can see the 3 times pre-flash, I believe it is noticeable when in TTL(iTTL) or TTL-BL and the subject distance is far enough to trigger the pre-flash.

I'm able to see the preflash. If you're shooting, you should be able to see a flash through the viewfinder just before the mirror goes up. If you open both eyes when shooting, you should be able to see 2 flashes with the other eye.
