In summary equipment is important, but not the main focus of photography.

( or to put it in another more palatable way )

In summary it is widely believed that the iphone/pns/whatever el cheapo camera can do what the high end dslr+expensive lenses can do with the caveat that the later user must be a doofus.

( translating to a real life scenario )

On the street if I do not know the stranger with top gear, and having lack of the uncanny ability to see what he captured on his camera from a distance, he can very well be safely assumed a doofus. (if u cannot beat him in equipment, there has to be some other higher grounds to secretly beat him in ) The probability of being labelled a doofus is exponentially increased if the owner is much younger comparatively.

In this game of outdoor guessing, sometimes i get to label others doofus, sometimes i kenna labelled doofus, maybe by the iphone and the hello kitty point and shoot users.

Maybe TS should add one more variable...

    whether is it -

    (1) the person behind the camera,
    (2) the camera, or
    (3) his post production skills

white can become black sometimes so who's to say what's not possible?

I would say the person behind the camera.

The person has the most important variable when a picture is taken, because without the "eye" of the person, no picture can be taken. A picture is a moment in time. The "eye" sees it, the camera captures it, the story is told in the picture. The camera does not "see"...it is like paper and pen, it takes a person to write the story, without the person, there is no story.

Without the person's eye, the moment has no meaning, therefore the picture has no story. If we have that "eye" - any camera will do the job, and the story is told in the picture. The camera records that story - which is told in the picture it captures as seen by our eyes.

    Peace.

can I end this "once and for all"

Of cause it's the person behind the camera, because the person needs to go to the shop, pay money for the best camera and lenses, and use the camera to take photos.

A camera cannot walk out of the shop, find it's owner nor take photos on by itself.

    Definitely the latter!

But i do agree that at some time of time, no matter how good you are, your camera still plays a role. (For eg. concerts and clubs, low light situation)

If anyone here can take good photos of concerts without blur and tripod and without noise with handphones, i am willing to put up my dslr for sale at 1 dollars tonight.

I see screwed up dslr these days. Don't anyone notice more people using popup flash on dslr on a bright day? ( they are noobs using auto mode)

I am lazy to read all the posts.

My thinking is that both are important. You need big aperture to make bokeh, >200mm for wildlife, etc......
Try doing wildlife and bokeh on a camera phone. you cant!

Smtimes it depends, for street photography, a camera phone will do.

Yes, these two aspects go hand in hand with each other.

Someone might have all the experience in pp-ing and at the field, but without the proper equipment, there is no way he can get that shot right.

Another guy may just have striked 4D and wants to buy that necklace that nowadays everyone wants to sling their neck. Yet, if he doesn't understand the basics of this art, then there is no point in getting this necklace.
