Default Nikon D80 or Canon EOS 450D?

I'm in the process of buying my first DSLR camera.
My cousin suggest to buy Canon 450D.
But my classmate's mom(who is a photographer in Singapore), told me that Nikon D80 is good.

    So which is which?
Can someone tell me their pro's and con's?

Thank you. Hope you help me in buying my new toy.

D80 is a 2006 model but is great for for starters and can last u with more options on lens (as compared to entry levels for nikon dslr)

450D personally i would recommend it and the features on it much more, live view, internal dust cleaning, digicIII sensor processor, etc.

Either one, u shouldnt go wrong. So compare both features on the cameras and look at sample pics. Then decide.

    EOS 450D disadvantages

    * Price
    * Exposure compensation only +/- 2.0 EV

I don't see what's the point because Nikon D80 has 2.0 EV too.

I researched this also in the internet.

This table is TOTALLY USELESS. So what if it gets the most clicks? It CANNOT be used to gauge how good a camera is. It only shows popularity.

The D80 is pretty old already. Although it doesn't mean photos taken will be bad though. Go try both of them out! Remember to bring memory cards, so you can compare pictures.

I have seen the difference of the output of pictures of the two cameras.
I'd be goin' for Canon but I still need to do some research.

Adhering to your comparision the 450D wins here as the D80 is EOL already with the D90 announced and launching soon.

If i were you, i tweak it a little to 450D vs D90

Are the differences in the output processed ?
Dun think it is easy to compare unless taken under similar settings

Definitely should hold out for D90 then decide.

If nothing the D90 may push the price of 450D lower.

Also check the quality of the lenses within your reach, it may make a difference (i.e. if you have the better camera but found out that the lenses you need / want are out of reach, maybe the other camera is a better buy?).

So D90 would be better than D80?

    Functionalities wise yes.
But depending on how it is used, it doesn necessarily translate to making better shots

Just go and buy either and start shooting. I'd go for the 450D because of the specs, in fact I was in this situation when getting the 400D vs 80D and choose the 400D then. Reason : pricing was better for the 400D and you'd get more features on the body. D80 was good in handling and the kit lens was better.

Honestly, this doesnt mean anything. It's just clicks. It doesn't compare anything but who clicks.

A better, although I'm not saying it's great comparison is http://flickr.com/cameras/

I think D80 and 450D are not in the same class..
450D is entry level but D80 /D90 is not.. the price also different a lot. ~1.5x
    D90 can record video sommore..
If I have the budget.. I will go for D90..

They are in the same range. Go one down and you reach the D60 and the 1000D. Go one up and you reach the D300 and 40D (now 50D). These are about the same range too.

Both camera are of the same level.

If you only want to compare specs info, you can try www.dpreview.com for comparison.

Alternatively, you can try out both camera in the shop, see which one give you better feel in handling and decide later.

    Hi,

I now am using the Nikon D80, at the time I was looking for camera, I was comparing the Canon EOS 400D and the Nikon D80.

I would assume the 450D to be quite similar to the 400D, plus the 'live View' feature and also a crippled Spot-metering feature.

-Canon 450D uses a CMOS sensor, while D80 uses a CCD sensor: CMOS is better in color tone and richer. 450D wins.
-450D ISO range 100-1600, D80 ISO range 100-3200: if absolutely need to shoot in low light, D80 wins, but user must accept the inherent noise level.
-450D/400D is small compared to the D80: the size must be determined by user, as the Canon 400/450D does lack in ergonomics, the hold is just too tight for larger hands, d80 wins in the ergonomics department.
-Accessing shooting information: 400/450D uses only the LCD with one command dial, D80 uses LCD and a top LCD panel with 2 command dials, easier in D80 to access and change the shooting settings, D80 wins in this department.
-400/450D has built-in sensor cleaner, D80 does not: 400/450D wins.
-Battery life: D80 has a larger battery capacity compared to a 400D, but not sure about the 450D.
    -450d has live-view, D80 does not, 450D wins here.
-D80 crop factor 1.5, 400/450D 1.6: pretty even here, except when shooting in wide angle lens, a 12mm lens in D80 shoots at 18mm, 450D shoots at 19.2mm. 450D has longer reach at the expense of wide angle shots.
-D80 kit lens 18-135, 450D kit lens 18-55 with IS: Nikon has longer reach, Canon has image stabilizer. IS makes better stationery pictures, longer lens needs better control in holding and techniques. Canon wins in my opinion.

Therefore, you have to ask which features are more important to you, good luck in your search for your first SLR, either system is worthy of a purchase. Maybe you wanna find out about the comparison of lens prices prior to your purchase, you must understand that you may not be simply buying a camera, but buying into a whole optical system, including of camera, accesories (battery grips, batteries, memory cards, etc), lenses (Original and Third party lenses, the most costly of the purchases..), etc.... , thus you will not switch over to other brands once you start.

Canon code: xD pro xxD semi xxxD entry
Nikon code: Dx pro Dxxx semi; Dxx entry

don't just compare specs. in between levels there will be a lot of different, and think what you want first.

personally, I think D80/60/40x has the best image quality(due to CCD), also personally, I don't really like the CMOS sensor, that's why I don't take D300/D700/D90

good think on Canon, metering works on all lens even xxxD
Nikon Dxx will not support manual lens (metering)

good thing on Nikon,if you change a split screen all focus point still as it was
canon xxxD after changing, the LED light gone only shows a blur spot.

if you want a fast come direct come out JPG, Nikon
if you want to try RAW, they are not much difference.
if you want to try more lenses, Canon
if you want to get a AF and split screen working together, Nikon

all my personal view, for reference
