    It means that's the number of shots left.

    unless you're talking about film, in that case its the number of frames left..

    Could also be buffer. When takign Multiple burst shots there is a buffer limit. Once the burst is at the limit it cannot take anymore shots until it reloads.

    Kinda right but its just an typical estimate. When you use JPEG or Compressed RAW, there is no way to tell how many pictures will fit on the remaining space on your memory card.
