first of all, are you using D60/D40?
if not, the motor is not a concern..

I concur.
I'm also using this lens (non-motor) with D300.

i'm using it too on the D80 focusing is REALLY fast lol. I would even say it's faster than the nikon 70-200 AF-S lens. Take note that F2.8 is quite unusable. F4 is razor sharp though!

hmmm look like im gonna upgrade to D80/D90 at the moment? lol..
i have never compare to a non motor version but mine is not that slow... it's only slow when fine tuning focus at tele end. probably D60's multi-cam 350 play a very important part on it! i bought it for the f2.8 though. haven't really got to try on smaller aperture.

haha you gotta see the screw version in action...and mine's only a D80 imagine one of those D single digit nikon cameras using this lens.... That's the prob with focusing motors in lens, your focusing speed is now fixed by the lens... it used to be fixed by the camera and gave ppl another reason to upgrade their cameras! (Of course the lens gearing plays a part as well and the 28-75 goes from infinity to .33m in like 30 degrees?)

do you encounter slightly slow fine tuning focus at tele end with D80? if dont have, i think it will not have even using the motor version. what i can do is to use AF-C (release priority) instead of AF-S to counter this problem.. but might have slightly soft pictures.

don't really experience what you do on the tele end. Another prob with the lightning fast focusing is that it might miss the the point when "travelling at full speed" lol. It just zooms past the sharp point. Happens most often with low contrast areas.
