Default Just got my Canon 40D ....

Just upgraded from 300D to 40D after the price drop. These days, read a lot of reviews. In clubsnap, saw complains on Error99. Did not see complains on AF which can be easily found in the net.

(1) Anybody encounter inconsistent AF issue ? In what mode ?
(2) Anybody encounter non-sharp issue pic due to shutter vibration ?
(3) The Default setting for dust clean is on (there will be a clean process during Power on or off). Which is better: dust clean during power on/off ? or disable it ?

Like to have your experience in settings of 40D. Any thing need to take care? Thanks.

Welcome to the 40D club! I didn't use the 40D enough to comment on your first 2 questions. So far so good lah. But as for dust clean, no harm keeping it on...it justs add a second when turn on/off.

Check that your firmware is the latest (1.0.8 if I'm not mistaken). Refer to your manual on how to check this.

Enjoy!

1. I've not had inconsistent AF until one day while taking a few continuous shots during an event, the AF locked on after half press. But went I moved the camera while still with half press on, the camera re-focused by itself! Arrrggghhh! Of course the shot was completely useless. Ever since then, I've been having similar problem so from now on I have to focus slowly. There are other smaller quality niggles on this camera which I've never had with my 300D and 20D. I have a very strong feeling Canon was rushing out this hardware.

2. There is a very good reason why the camera offers mirror lockup. Try using it.

3. Can't tell you which is better but I leave the default setting on.

Apart from point 1 (which I'll be sending in for repair), I do have many more keepers with the 40D comparing to its older brethrens.

You sure it's not just the AI Focus switching to Servo Mode and following the locked object when moving the camera? Keep it on One-Shot AF and see what happens.

Please no guessing games here.
I didn't say I was using AI focus or servo mode.
Forgive my ignorance in other modes because I know how to use one shot mode only.

Thanks for all replies. Appreciated.

For mirror lock-up, need to enable it first in the CF, before shooting. Switching it on and off needs some button presses.

I am also in the IT product design and manufacturing line. I know what will happen if rush to the 1st few batches of a new product ...... I prefer get it after the dust settles down when both hardware and firmware are mature/enhanced enough through the market feedback ....
