on 1.6x crop dslr, using the 18-55 IS kit lens gives you equ. view of the 28-80 lens used on a full frame dslr / film. advantage is the IS that comes with the 18-55.
if a 28-80 is used on 1.6x crop dslr, it gives equ. view of a 45-128 lens, to long to shoot buildings, interial of hotel / restourents that you may want to record during the tour, also without the IS, may be difficult if you want to capture the ambient lighting. think of it this way, during film era, 28-80 is a kit lens, no IS, people use it. now, with 18-55 IS kit lens on 1.6x crop dslr, you get the same thing plus IS. isnt it great?

Try 17-85mm IS.
