I love my sigma lens
I have the full range from 17mm to 300mm Sigma 12-24 sigma 17-70 Sigma 70-200 Sigma 75-300 unfortunately for me, things arent going well after 2 years of use. I often thought it was abuse or bad drybox etc But as you can see, its bubble beneath the surface....... A very shinny surface ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by lightrules; 22nd July 2009 at 03:05 PM. |

Moreover, it's well known that the outer coating on Sigma lenses will peel after a while. Doesn't matter to me since it doesn't affect picture quality, and those who buy Sigma lenses should know what they are in for if they have done their research.

got some sigma users went to force off the peel, making it into a metallic grey kind of finish, looks cool as well.
sad to say sigma never really bother about their lens peeling issue. Last edited by Simon_84; 21st August 2008 at 02:09 PM. |

Since it's paint, it will peel eventually... Although both of my Sigmas have not yet.(about a year old). Even Nikkors peel after a while. Sigma's peel quicker since the finish is not smooth, hence more friction. But echo on what was said previously, it's purely cosmetic.

It seems that the paint finish becomes brittle... maybe your drybox is too dry?

I have a range of Sigma Lens.
18-200mm DC OS 28-300mm Aphs 24-70mm F2.8 There isnt any single wear & tear on all my lens. Even thou my 28-300mm should be more than 3years+, still in mint condition. Its really depends how much you really take care of your lens. Using it very often or poor handling are likely to be the cause. Peeling may also cause by humidity around the environment, especially when contact with water. Cleaning process, Rain Drop...etc. |

Look at the 3rd and 4th picture: the zoom ring also shows signs (not just hints) of usage. Looks as if either the material is a bit soft or your hands are a bit hard for the equipment. Anyway, as long as the image quality is not affected I don't see any issue here. And when people ask how you manage to take breathtaking shots you can take out the lenses and show the scars of the "battlefield"
![]() Secondly, if only one lens is affected you might also have just a fluctation in quality. |

metal treating and finishing affects the cost of the product. for such event above is partly due to the quality control and the type of paint or finish used. That will affect the adhesion of the paint to the plastic or metal.

Looks like someone is from the metal finishing industry ![]() I was doing that for a while and from the looks of that bubbling, straight away, its surface preparation before coating....there is bad adhesion to substrate. No chance of wear or abrasion, there is no sign of wear which would show as graduation in coating thickness..... See how shinny the surface below ? thats a sure give away that no abrasion |

My Sigma 100-300 is peeled to death. It has nothing to do with abrasion, purely QC and quality of the finishing itself.
It is a long time problem that certain Sigma lenses are known for. I believe Sigma knows about it but doesn't give two hoots. |

This is my understanding of the problem. Sigma didn't test the primer (first coat of paint) for the alumimum or plastic parts. The 2 main causes of ageing and deterioration are heat and UV. Just got to do some accelerated heat and UV testing. Doesn't cost that much. The paint supplier is in a good position to advise and carry out testing.

As for the peeling...mine's almost completely peeled so I gaffered it. Am not comfortable with leaving the metal exposed. |

![]() I don't buy the argument i see frequently that "If Sigma can't even get their lens finishes right, their IQ must be horrible" But it is kinda sad that they couldn't get sth so basic right.. ![]() oh wells, if they can't solve it,gaffer it up! ![]() |

![]() On a more serious note, metal, that is to say aluminum alloy is not damaged by UV or dirty hands. So no worries. It's a matter of aesthetics only.
