Hi all,
Need some opinion on Canon's Macro Ring Flash, MR-14EX. Is it worth getting if I'm into shooting macro - mainly flowers and insects outdoors? I have a 430EX now, and results are so-so outdoors. What else can I do with MR-14EX? Any good for portraits? Thanks! |

A MT-24EX will be better for macro. Do note that these Macro Flash can only be mounted on certain lens.

I heard it produce portraits with very little shadow...... but won't fit all type of lens. If I'm not wrong..... only up to lens of 58mm (EF 100mm Macro or EF 50mm f1.4... etc). Can anyone confirm is 77mm lens (17-40mm f4) be able used it ?? ![]() |

The flash also need a special place for the attachment to clip on. Not all lens has that groove even though it is 58mm.

I think you are right..... just got this from Canon AUST
That leaves us with only Ray Flash - Ringflash Adapter - http://www.flaghead.co.uk/pages/ringflash-intro.html And it isn't cheap...... $400+++ when I saw it on the internet. CP is selling also, not sure how much. Also have to see the correct Ringflash Adapter model for the correct camera and flash..... If you upgrade ![]() |

Won't be that easy to DIY. Heard someone uses a Ring light tube.... but the light can only goes on or off.... not flash. ![]() |

ring light = light always on ring flash = fires a flash then u snap a photo however, i tried it at the shop last week, then ring flash doesn't always fire!!!! that means u MIGHT miss the golden oppurtunity when u r shooting insects! it is however, cheap..... $120 only....................... anyone has more info on this sunpak thing, please share some info! thanks! |

Canon makes ringflash 52C, 58C and 72C Macrolite Adapter for lenses without groove. If you want to use filters, mount it on the lens forst, then mount the adapter on the filter. Its not cheap, but it works. Here's a link. Scroll down too see the adapters:
