May I ask if you have done any research of your own on this so far?

On CS alone, there are several threads on this that I have replied to just within the past two days, so there is really no lack of information on this topic.

Here's something to get you started: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=404548

    OPEN WIDE

    Nikon 12-24 f/4
    Nikon 14-24 f/2.8
    Tokina 12-24 f/4
    Tokina 11-16 f/2.8
    Sigma 12-24 f/4.5-5.6
    Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6

Out of those, I'd recommend the Tokina 12-24 f/4.
Built solid, wide enough and value for money!

Personally, I went with the Sigma 10-20mm and was immensely pleased with it.

You will probably get a mix bag of opinions cause there aren't any that are horribly bad.
My pick is the Nikon 12-24mm for the DX sensor. Very lightweight zoom , and you can probably pick one up at a good price from B&S

    It's a 10-20mm f/4-5.6, not a f/4 constant.

Frankly, all of them are well-built, so build quality is not a differentiating factor.

You must check some of the lens mentioned. Might not AF with D40 and D40x. Personally i felt that telephoto zooms and wide zoom lens are on par and comparable in prices. Nikon aside the Sigma, Tokina and Tamron wide zooms lens should be okay for beginners.

The expensive ones are primes. Prime fixed focal lengths at both wide and telephoto.

The Sigma and Nikkor will AF on your D40x. The others won't.

    Sigma 10-20

    Reason
    1) AF on ur D40x
    2) Wider (i mean, if u want wide, might as well go wider right)
    3) Aperture not that much of a problem (for me). I usually use at smaller than F5.6 for landscape, so no issue.
    4) D40x is light. U won't need a tank in front of it.
