Yup. If you'regoing to go for the best of the best, then i'd say that right now the Nikon D3 or Canon 1ds mkIII is what you're looking for (we haven't seen what the Sony A900 can do yet). But for entry-level to mid-range, C and N have stripped too many things out. At least with O,P,S you get other benefits such as great liveview (especially on O and S) and built-in anti-shake (no need to buy an IS/VR lens).

you might wanna consider the olympus E420.

small light and with the 14-42 kit(which is a very decent kit lense imo) should cost you under $1k

live view, and most importantly a very small body

Doesnt matter which camera you intend to buy actually.
If you're a new to photography, any camera will do.
If you got $$$, get the highest end you can afford.
Go start taking pictures with whatever tools you got, and take the best out of it.
    Proceed from there.
Prices are available anywhere in the newspapers and web. Research first.

Dont buy for the sake of one-two snapshots only to be left on the shelves later...
Already abused my D40 and D80 for my flickr

That's because they sucker people like you into buying new compact cameras.

I'm still using my F30 from more than 2 years ago, and doubt I will be changing that camera anytime soon.

I'd say buy a Nikon D3 or Canon 1Ds MkIII. Why skimp? Confirm the pictures you take will make people go WOW.

cams are never cheap at comex/IT shows and they give unnecessary freebies as well.

as long as you're not afraid of being labelled a camera-geek, then go ahead and use a dSLR (or any larger camera) in friend and family gatherings, lol

Nothing to fear of being a camera geek. What you should fear is becoming a gear whore and thinking that just cause you're holding a big, bad dSLR your pictures are ready for Nat Geo. Remember, gear counts, but what counts even more is the person (not necessarily photographer) wielding the gear.
