Just curious if anyone here shoot in RAW mode or just high quality jpg or both?
RAW mode gives a the user more choices to manipulate the photos but takes up more space whereas the user can still manipulate high quality jpg albeit less options but takes up so much less space. Please correct me if my concept is wrong ![]() |

Yes, I shoot in RAW. Gives more options to the "manipulation", but it cannot "cure" OOF.
Still learning, the RAW stuff. But sometimes, I like to shoot in JPEG. Easy to download and file away, not much PP. Anyway, whatever it is. Still learning...... Photography takes a lot of time to learn and a lifetime to master.

I only shoot in RAW
JPG is compressed and every modification or alteration to the image potentially affects its integrity. RAW is like your original film negative. Every possible detail is stored and kept for your reference. Storage space is very cheap these days and will continue to be cheaper. Image integrity and preservation should always be of top priority since you can always get a new hard disk.

There is a similar thread in digital darkroom, threadstarter should look at that before making a new thread. Agreed with the rest, I shoot only in RAW as well, will feel naked if I don't.

I don't even shoot Jpeg Fine. I only shoot Large Normal. Although Raw gives you much more headroom, you won't need the additional information in most circumstances. I only shoot Raw if I intend to push exposure or if I know AWB is goin to fail me. Aside from these 2 reasons can't seem to think of why I would want to shoot Raw.
I shoot for leisure btw, photography is a way for me to release stress. I recently came back from a 1 week holiday in australia with 1k+ shots. Imagine how relaxing it would be to process 1k+ raw. Gimme a break. |

For snapshots and non critical photo shoots, I use JPG fine.... but for my commercial work, it's 100% RAW. Alot more image detail is captured by RAW compared to JPG.

It's Raw or nothing.. or unless you are printing the photos directly after you have shot them, then it makes sense to shoot in Jpeg.

RAW only if photo delivery can wait...
RAW + JPEG S/M/L...if photo delivery can wait, but there is a need to print or project on the spot. =D |

When I do events with only 4gigs worth of CF cards and love to spam, I shoot JPG.
Other than that, I'll use RAW. Makes sense to, because RAW is 12bit (on 400D; 14bit on 40D and newer) whereas Jpg is compressed (8bit). Converting RAW to DNG then printing that one would be better.

definitely shoot in RAW. takes up more space, but like sebastiansong said, storage disks and all are just getting cheaper and cheaper so no worries there.
oh and i think there's nothing wrong with starting another thread to discuss this here. |

Im using the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom2 Trial now, and it's such a workflow saver to me, especially since I can come back from a shoot with many raw files. And yes, Noise reduction applied =) LR2 noise reduction is quite good.

A photographer I know commented that if you are confident in what you shoot and know how the photos will turn out, why is there a need to shoot in RAW? Not totally untrue I would say.
