Hi all Canon Lens user..... got a question that need anwering.... Google didn't give me a definite answer here.
This have to do with the 'IS' on Canon's lense..... It is known that when you were to mount your camera onto a tripod with an 'IS' enable lens, you would have to switch the 'IS' off - incase of "bad IS behavior" (quote from a website). This is true if you are using the older/cheaper version of IS lens... 100-400mm L being one of them, and I think EF-S 55-250mm IS is another example. While 'Newer' IS lens have tripod-sensitive IS mode. My question is on my EF 70-200mm f4 IS L...... while one website claims that this 3rd gen IS have the same tripod-sensitive capability... on the Canon Manual (page ENG-9).... it talks about turning IS off when utilizing a tripod to prevent unnecessary battery drain. Is this as Canon Manual claims (Battery Drain).... or is the EF 70-200mm f4 IS L not having a tripod-sensitive IS mode. ![]() Do anyone have an idea. Thxs for any info. |

I think 2nd gen IS onwards has tripod sensitive capabilities right? Not sure, but confirm 3rd gen (70-200 f/4IS) has tripod sensitive IS.
IS only kicks in when you depress the focusing button (shutter / back-button-focusing-button / AF-on), so it only drains battery during that time. What the manual probably suggests is that since you're using the setup on a tripod, it should already be steady enough that IS isn't needed.

The EF 70-200m f4L IS USM's IS has tripod-sensitive capability.
It has the 4th generation IS which allows you to hand held 4-stops slower. However, turning on IS will sufficiently drain up the battery faster. |

I think it'll be stupid to have I.S activated on a tripod....It's already so stable, why in the first place need it. If you're going to hold it and take pictures you can always turn it on....otherwise switch it off when using a tripod.

I would think either way, it wouldn't make too much sense to have IS on when you are tripod-mounted, so just switch it off. Saves batteries too.

I concur. It’s pure common sense.

IS is only a tool. it need not be on at all times.
