perhaps if you only plan to put the above stuffs you can consider the 30L cabi instead of the 40L, it's sub 100 only.. if not you can try get a dry box @ ard $20?

lens hood i dont think it's worth it or you will need it.. both the 18-55 n 55-250 hoods are a tube like piece of plastic, not the petal shaped kind.. i got hood for my 55-250 however it has not been helpful..

filter definitely, @ least get the protection filter for both lens.. however if you are going to take landscape shots with the kit lens consider getting kenko 58mm pro1d cpl filter instead of the normal uv filter..

hope this helps...

I just got my Canon 450D 1.5 months back. My beginning kit includes:

1. Canon 450D with Kit Lens [EF18-55mm IS]
2. Canon EF55-250mm IS Lens
3. Hoya UV Filters
4. Digi-Cab 30L (more than enough to store 2-3 bodies and 4-6 lens)
5. Panasonic Tripod (given free by the retailer - may upgrade to a better one later)

I am now shopping for a (heavy duty) battery, a good flash unit, a EF50mm lens and a haversack camera bag. Any good suggestions for these? Any other survival kit I should add?

How does the fliter protect the lens? Are you talking about a polarized filter or just a normal one. I can't get a polarized filter, due to that the lens i'm going to get has a rotating focus in the front. During AF or manual modes.

The UV filer will protect the front element against scratches and dirt. Most important of all, it will also have a chance of protecting your precious lens should you drop it

But when i add the filter, must i always remove the fliter to add on the lens cap or can i just add the lens cap over the filter?

Yup, the lens cap can be fitted on with the filter installed. The filter is the same size btw so there shouldnt be any problems.

But be careful of cheap filters, some of them can cause flares due to reflection in strong lightings.
Hoya is a good filter for it's price, but if you are willing to fork out more money u can buy the B+W filter which peforms better

I ended up buying Hoya on recommendation by a salesman at CP (since I am a newbie). So far it works for me...but may upgrade to better filter once i recuperate from my spending spree.

For dry cab, the model is Digi-Cabi DB-036 (30L). Can get it directly from digi-cab warehouse at tagore lane (Cash & Carry only) or from shops like MS Color. For bigger capacity (>30L), can call them for home delivery :-).

Next step for me is to join CS outings, learn from the seniors and of course, have fun!

Is good choice to start with..!!!

You'll not going wrong buying 450D.

As for the lens, I would suggest you just get one a lens first.
This lens "Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM".
is will be a good start...

Is good for walk around lens.

I own both lens you mentioned..
BTW what you plan to shot? street, sports, landscape or Portraiture???

ohya... one more thing you had miss out... A good and solid tripod...!!!
for taking night shot...

Actually, I do believe delivery is only for 60L and above.

I've noticed you exercise very strong brand loyalty to Canon. I used to do that to until I realised the Canon isn't doing anything to pay me back for that loyalty, so in the end it's really quite silly, so I'd rather just be making images, hopefully good ones, regardless of camera brand.
