How I wish they had left some of these old buildings in place, instead of tearing down everything that's more than 2 years old. It was a pretty good looking city for its time - it has aged worse than Elizabeth Taylor.

Thanks for the link. Really like the arial shot of Beach Road with Raffles Hotel and the old NCO Club in the foreground. See how close the sea was then. No Suntec City and Marina Bay at all!
Brought back fond memories of my childhood days! |

You scanned some of those from old postcards?
Most of these dates back to the 70s. |

Could be a nice project to find these spots and places and take pictures again, as of today. Since I know Singapore only for 4 years now I can hardly recognise the places. But one thing I noticed: the sky seemed to be clearer those days. Thanks for sharing, it's always interesting to me to look into the history of cities and countries.

Yeah.. my grandfather can still show me the places of his youth, despite of a terrible war and 40 years of weird political conditions. Those houses are still in use and now well maintained again. Many people love these old places, it's part of the identification with city and country. How many Singaporeans can show their grandchildren the places of their youth?

Hence we should start documenting the surrounding now.

For a real surreal experience, try watching the slideshow and listening to this hokkien song:
http://beemp3.com/download.php?file=...Bong+Chun+Hong Xnoybis: And yes, Singapore has aged with absolutely no grace at all. The more they try to manufacture "soul", the more it looks just skin-deep. |

Great idea! Was thinking of the same thing..that should be a joint project undertaken by all of us. Is there anyway we can create an album where we can all jointly post pictures of the same places next to the old pictures?

I guess these pics are right up your alley Kit, maybe with a bit more of a documentary style, and less artistic flair. |

I pin that feeling arising from the buildings looking brand new, and the copious amount of space between buildings as compared to modern landscapes. And maybe also the fact that "white" was the default colour of buildings back then. Last edited by swishbrade; 13th August 2008 at 10:36 PM. |
