Rashkae has made a good point.
If you are worried that you may buy a wrong brand, don't worry.
There's never a wrong choice! Only depends on how well you can operate your equipment.
Go borrow from your friends, or to the showrooms to try out the stuff until you are set on your decision.
A basic kit is good enuf for a beginner to explore photography! Till when you are willing to spend more then think about the Lens & accessories.

I've been using my friends DSLR camera 2 weeks ago. (I don't know the brand but I'm pretty sure its not Canon EOS 450D)
And I'm getting a hang of it, I just need to do more adjusting with the DSLR.

my recommendation: Buy Nikon D300 + lens 18-200 VR

the camera is a good buy now, the price drops a lot recently.
18-200VR covers almost all the zoom range needed

My Advise: Go down to the shop. Try, try, try...

Choose the one that impresses you most and fits your budget.

ai yah .... student right? ... not raking in big bucks every month + it's a hobby right? ...

IMO, just get a 2nd E300/D70/300D/350D + kit lens ... these easily cost the same price as a new mid-range PnS ... i saw a 2nd hand e300 go for abt $400 ... which is dirt cheap ... dun need the latest/newest camera with the most bells & whistles ... the e300/d70/300d/350d or even 20d are already damn solid + very affordable now ...

honestly, my advice is to get one of those, doesn't matter which camp ... use it for a year or so ... get one or two more lenses ... then decide if u need to upgrade to continue pursuing your hobby ...

i used a d70 for 1yr+ then switched to e300 ... been using it for 2 years liao ... still very good =) besides, nat geo has been using the damn old e1 until recently ...

You are very fortunate to have your family paying, but it does mean you should be wise about spending

If you are really on about the 450D, just go ahead and get it. Just don't say we didn't tell you there were alternatives.

That is a lousy alternative...8MP only.

OK better not confuse TS. Megapixels don't give you sharpness btw. They merely give you a larger picture.

Cool to hear your family supporting you
You seem to have your mind on the 450D lol, next thing you wanna do is to go down to a shop and try it out. While you're there, try out other cameras from other brands too D60 etc

Don't consider a camera better just because someone says so - ultimately you're the guy who's gonna be using it and so you'll need to make sure you get one you're comfortable with first else it'll just kill your interest in the hobby

You in cebu, right? You need to check if the brands you are buying into have direct support there.

Do you need to buy now or you can wait till end of this year?

    If budget doesn't matter, skip the entry level (450D) and go directly to the mid-range cams.... recommend Nikon D300 + 18-200VR + 50mm f/1.8 + SB900 + a decent Tripod + a good camera bag +....

the range of the Canon EOS 450D is P39,500 - P42,500.
(It's P39,500 because of the student's discount, and its the price of the kit)

    What about Nikkon DSLR Cameras?
Can someone recommend me to compare it with Canon EOS 450D?

It's nearest direct competitor is the Nikon D80, which is a couple of years old. Expect the replacement any time soon.

Look, in the end whichever brand you buy, most brands of SLRs nowadays are really great to start off with. There's really nothing to separate them.

But, if focal lengths make any sense to you now, you should be looking at buying into a system that gives you the lenses you want to shoot with.
