There is never enough disk space.

My computer only has the operating system, the programs and some space for local documents. All the rest is sitting remotely on a server where the disks are running in RAID1. No need to mess with the small space in a computer, server cases can easily house several hard disks and the operating system (Linux) knows how to deal with that in a proper way. Net capacities of >1TByte are not an issue.
The only thing unsolved is backup... either the tape drives are affordable but it needs a tape jockey to swap the tapes .. or the better tape drives kill my budget. Let's see with Blueray...

    PC:

    C: - 142 GB
    D: - 142 GB

    External HDD

    160GB Total

Original photos dating back since 2001 is stored in the PC, and a complete backup is residing in the External HDD. Of course, for security reasons(more of viruses ) the HDD is not connected to the PC 24/7
At first we used CD-R to backup the photos, but i found out that the lifespan of the CDs are not long(typically 1-2 years, according to research articles) and some of it has already started degrading in quality so i bought a external HDD as the main backup media

    Don't think there's a 1TB portable (2.5") yet.

Your best bet is 1TB 3.5" drives, but i can't remember prices offhand. Some scouting in Sim Lim should render you good results. Memory prices can only go down.

aggressive deletion policy.. is the best way to save space.

but in the off chance that people actually want to buy photos that you think weren't that good.. then you have a problem..

    External 1TB ranges from $299 to $369.
    Internal 1TB is around $230+
    External 2TB now is $700+++++++

I'd say get what you need, and have an organised storage structure.

It is never enuf if you don't do house keeping like me.
I have 120GB in my PC, External 40GB, 80GB and 250GB through the years.
However, since shooting raw last year and ripping CD into MP3, I am about to run out of space again.
Go for 500GB or I TB if you are looking for upgrading storage capacity.

That's the main thing! Adding external HDDs like crazy doesn't help at all. It's neither a safe storage nor a proper backup or archive. Each topic has it's target and needs a certain approach. Hard disks are only the "work room", but never the "safe" or "archive".
Funny that people can spend SGD 2.5k on a single lens but getting stingy when it comes to proper storage for half the money...
Personally, I don't trust any HDD >500GB, yet. Looking at IT industry I can't see those 500GB HDDs in big storage systems that are sold to business customers. There must be a good reason to be more conservative
The main question is "How well can you survive a total loss of data?" or "How much are you willing to spend to recover your data". I remember a quote to recover data from a company laptop: SGD 1200 for 40GB HDD. Recently a friend also had such a problem and got quoted SGD 600 for a 200GB HDD.

Octarine, one cannot stress how important having additional drives can make. Scratch disks and RAID can really save your life sometimes. The size can only increase considering all we do is store store and store RAW files but never delete them.

Good luck if your storage method is messy. When it comes to large number of files on large drives, you want to tidy them up? Good luck. No worries on the >500GB sizes. I've got a 500, a 750 and a 1TB running data back and forth and so far so good. Western Digital drives only.

I have about 1 TB of storage space.

About 100 GB of Mp3s, 50GB of photos, and about 850GB of porn. One can never have too much porn.
