Hmmm... I use the 17-40 as a replacement for my kit lens 18-55~ so it doesnt quite serve the wide angle function on my crop body~ =D but if i need the extra wide angle, i'll definitely get the 10-22 =D

What he say is, they are of different uses, not fair to compare.
If you talk about quality, they are similar, L or not, 10-22 has L optics but in an EF-S built.

10-22 is around 16-35 in FF, which makes it similar to 17-40 when the 17-40 is mount on FF.

The same old question if you are asking uwa lenses purchase.

    going ff? 17-40.
    stay in aps-c 10-22.

going ff but feeling rich, buy both.

I don't see how 10-22mm can be fairly compared to 17-40mm on a same format, and let's try to drop the mindless L lens worship; the 10-22mm exhibits image quality worthy of the L branding, but is not a L lens simply because it is only usable on cameras that allow mounting of EF-S lenses.

I have a 40D and a 10-22mm. I like the UWA provided...not much of a choice for a cropped body. I find that the edges can be a bit soft on the 10mm end. Can't be helped, but the ultra wide-ness it provides is just so great that often shoot with it.

If I have a chance to go FF, I'd go for the 16-35mm II instead of 17-40mm.

Sorry but... how can one possibly compare lenses of such different focal lengths? Pretty close to asking between 24-105 to 70-200.

10-22 is what I am using for my 40D as it's the widest I can get for my 1.6x but upon upgrading to FF I'll be using 17-40 (which am contemplating with 12-24 Sigma DG HSM) which is far more affordable than 16-35 - I see myself shooting above f/5 on UWA lens most of the time.

17-40 is a great and affordable L lens!
