Was it cloudy? Your 1/8 sec exposure seems to be partly obscured. How much PP (for exposure) did you do?

I was a little surprised at the settings actually. I can usually shoot with smaller apertures at higher shutter speed. Did you apply a lot of sharpening as well? The halo at the edges seems indicative of over-sharpening.

One last question - tripod or hand-held?

Hmm, maybe in-camera sharpening then? Or sharpening could be applied when you resize the image smaller.

For comparison, here's two I took, one with a 75-300 and the other with a 100-400, both 100% crops, max. focal . The 75-300 has an obvious halo from sharpening. I'm not embedding the images since this is your thread.

1/125 @ f/11, ISO 200, 400mm

Almost no sharpening has been done to the 400mm version. It's a little soft because my eyes can't help me manual focus at night That's one of the times when I miss LiveView.

DSLRs are not that different despite what some like to claim. Anyway, like I said, the halos could be due to the resizing. You did resize, right?

Anyway, I find moonshots fun and I hope you enjoy it too. I hope I'm not coming across as dissing your images - I'm not. I won't call them spectacular (neither are mine) but they're far from bad. Just wanted to offer some suggestions on how to improve it.

For inspiration, here's some amazing shots by a Filipino with his amazing combo - not quite a telescope, but so big it's not too far from one (he uses it for birds mostly).
