Default 5700 User Set problem in firmware ver 1.1

Hi 5700 owners,

Do you encounter the same problem as described below? I encountered it recently after upgrading the firmware to 1.1. Initially I thought it was something wrong with my cam, and took it to the Nikon service centre. But they juz called me and told me it was a setting problem, so i checked dpreview and found the info below. So, is the solution suggested, correct?

When i use one of the exposure modes (P,S,A orM) in user sets 1,2 or 3 a strange thing happens. Having moved away from the user set defaults i cannot alter the shutter speed or the aperture settings by turning the command dial. Also i cannot alter the exposure mode by holding down the mode button and turning the command dial.

The above are working fine on initial start up but after reviewing
an image and returning to shooting mode the problem arises. The
above problem means that i have to turn the camer a off and then back on. When the camera is set to default values everything works fine. Any views on this subject would be welcome. Thanks.

make sure that A.E Lock is not on. You can turn it off through menu page 2, EXP, AE Lock, off

Am quite irritated by Nikon Service Centre btw. I took my cam there on Monday and described my problem clearly to them. If it was a setting problem they could have told me on the spot. Instead, they retained the cam. I went there again to collect the "repaired" cam. Service staff told me they changed a part which I did NOT request service for. I checked the cam - the problem I had logged wasn't dealt with.

Service staff says sorry, pls leave your cam behind, we will look into it again. And NOW they call me and tell me it's a user setting problem, and i have to go down again to pick the cam up. That makes THREE trips to the service centre to fix something that wasn't even mechanical...surely they should have recognised the problem early? And their svc centre is so out of the way, and opens only 9-5 weekdays, I have to make special effort to go down wan leh!

hi zookeeper~

i don't quite understand exactly wat the writer means in that quote, but i have never had a problem changing shutter or aperture settings in the respective exposure modes. however i only use user setting 1, and never 2 or 3, and never in A.

i've never had experience with nikon service centre b4, but u're not the first person i've heard complain about them.

Thanks Joho. Hmm...once i get my cam back I will test it out...to see if the problem occurs in specific user sets...

Yah man, I realise I'm not the only one who has complaints abt them. I feel as if I have put my kid thru' an operation, only to find out from the doctors that "Hey, sorry, there was nothing wrong with your kid after all..." A bit exaggerated to compare my cam to a live human being lah...BUT....

Okie, enough ranting from me...

A note about Nikon Service Centre. The 2 frontline staffs are more proficient in SLR camera. They are not quite digital expert. You could request to speak to Max (5700 expert) or other technical staffs. Tell them it could be a small problem and you hope to solve it on the spot. Otherwise they would keep the cam and issue u a receipt, more so if they are busy.

Frontline staff are familiar with lens/SLR and would usually look at it first b4 consulting backroom pple. Nikon staff are quite nice pple, do take extra effort to be nice to them and I'm sure they would return in kind.

Joho, yup, my kid OK already. But I'm still not very happy with Nikon service centre. They did not even attempt to explain to me what user setting problem it was that caused the problem. Not logged on the service report either.

Shutterbug, well, seems that my experience is a little different. Maybe the ones you dealt with were nice? Actually, I don't know if the customer svc staff i dealt with were nice or not, but they came across as rather unprofessional. Chatting amongst themselves while customers were waiting, not forthcoming with help. First impression counts, and my first experience with them has already left a bad taste in my mouth....
