    RAFA CALLS FOR URGENT IMPROVEMENT

Rafael Benitez finds himself and his rocky Liverpool side under pressure before a ball has even been kicked in the new Premier League campaign.

After a shocking midweek Champions League performance away to Standard Liege, the Anfield chief faces another searching examination by Roy Keane's new-look Sunderland on Saturday at the Stadium of Light.

And Benitez admits he must shake Liverpool out of their lethargy very quickly if they are not to start the top flight campaign with growing question marks hovering over them.

After the near-disaster in Belgium, Liverpool must get their act together quickly.

Benitez said: "We need to change our mentality quickly for the Premier League opener.

"Facing Sunderland away will be a very tough game, they have strengthened their squad and are always difficult on their own ground.

"We have a few minor injuries, bruises, and so on. Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun have got some small problems but they will be okay for the game in Sunderland."

But there must again be a doubt over skipper Steven Gerrard's fitness. He was eventually thrown into the Liege battle in desperation with 24 minutes to go, Benitez admitting he did not really want to risk the midfielder's troublesome thigh injury.

Benitez said: "We would have preferred that he did not need to play, we waited and waited, but in the end we needed him because we were not in control of midfield."

Gerrard played at virtually half-pace to help secure a goalless draw in the third qualifying round, first leg. Whether Gerrard is considered fit enough to face Sunderland from the start is now open to debate.

Benitez said: "Competition for places must improve, we have several away or injured. We need more players to out pressure on players.

"I do not like to talk about specific players, but clearly we were not the best. We were not good in midfield or the defence.

"If you have more players competing for positions in the team things are better. We need new players, but for the moment we must work to make the ones we have got better players."

Dutch striker Dirk Kuyt added: "Now we are looking forward to Saturday and the first league game at Sunderland to show who we are and what we are.

"We know in Liege it was not our best game. But we want to step things up and we know there is quality in the team, we have shown that in pre-season and now we must show it in competitive matches too.

"We have some big games coming up. One of those is on Saturday at Sunderland. So we must not play again like we did against Standard."

BARRY SAGA NOT MY FAULT - BENITEZ

Rafael Benitez has blamed the Liverpool hierarchy for the protracted Gareth Barry transfer saga.

The Anfield boss, preparing for Saturday's Premier League opener at Sunderland, was very clear that he still wants the Aston Villa midfielder.

And he privately dismissed as unimportant the fact that Barry is now cup-tied for the first phase of the Champions League, having played for Villa in the UEFA Cup this week.

But Benitez surprisingly turned the spotlight on chief executive Rick Parry and the club's owner - he specifically only used the singular - to mastermind a way out of the saga that has rumbled on all summer.

Benitez said: "I will try to be very clear over the (Barry) situation. Everyone has been talking and it seems that the blame is put on me.

"I get blamed for everything, for global warming to high petrol prices.

"But in this case I want to be very clear. Since I talked to Martin O'Neill about the situation in April, I have not talked to anyone at Aston Villa.

"All the talks have been between our chief executive Rick Parry, the owner and the chief executive of Aston Villa. And those talks have all been pretty good.

"So if anyone wants to talk about Barry in the future they must talk with the owner, Rick Parry or the chief executive of Aston Villa. And as I have said, those talks I understand have been good.

"I was not involved in the talks about Barry, I was not involved in the talks about (Xabi) Alonso and Arsenal. If you want to talk about these players you must talk to the chief executive of our club who was handling the discussions.

"If you want to talk about players, then you talk to Rick Parry. If you want to talk about football, then you talk with me."

Parry made it clear last weekend that the club were not happy with the 18million price tag for Barry, his age or length of contract.

But Benitez clearly still wants Barry in his team to solve his left-sided problems.

He said: "The squad is better but we now have problems on the left because we have lost (John Arne) Riise, (Harry) Kewell and (Sebastian) Leto.

"We will see what happens in the future with that situation, but clearly our squad is better."

And the fact that Benitez has now specifically linked Alonso with a possible move to Arsenal underlines that he would have been happy to sell the Spain international to the Gunners for the right price.

Privately Benitez believes that the question of Barry now being cup-tied from the Champions League group stages - he could play in the knockout phase in February - is of no consequence.

Benitez was willing to sanction a four-year contract, so for Barry to be unavailable for six group stage games this season is an inconvenience but not a problem in the long term.

Whether Benitez eventually gets his man is still open to debate because co-owner Tom Hicks will not pay 18million. But it seems possible now that a lower fee will be offered to take into account the issue of the 27-year-old being initially cup-tied in Europe.

So Benitez goes into the new campaign stubbornly clinging onto the hope that he will get his number one summer target.

And he believes Liverpool can make a sustained challenge for the title, despite the shocking performance in Liege in midweek which cast doubts over the manager's planning.

Benitez said: "You have to be opportunistic when you have a squad like ours. I would just like our Olympic players back to help us. But we will probably have one player in the final the rest can return soon.

"The age of the squad is much lower, they are good players and can be a very good team for now and the future.

"Our fans want a trophy every season. They would want the league title, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Carling Cup in that order.

"But if you asked me what I would prefer, then I would say I agree with our supporters."

And Benitez confirmed that Steven Gerrard will be fit to lead Liverpool into the new season.

Gerrard was only used for the final 24 minutes of the disappointing midweek Champions League draw against Standard Liege following a thing injury.

Gerrard trained yesterday and today and will be in the side at the Stadium of Light. There are doubts over Xabi Alonso and Yossi Benayoun following minor muscle injuries from the game in Belgium, but Fabio Aurelio and Martin Skrtel are both back in contention.

    CARLSBERG LEAVES A NASTY TASTE

Liverpool fans have called for a boycott of the club's replica kits after sponsors Carlsberg teamed up with The Sun.

The newspaper, still reviled in Liverpool for its coverage of the Hillsborough disaster which cost the lives of 96 fans, will publish a free voucher to be redeemed in any one of 13,000 pubs over the Augst Bank Holiday weekend. It is estimated that more than three million free pints of Carslberg will be given away.

"This year more than ever we wanted to support British pubs with a promotion designed to drive more people through the door with the promise of a free pint on us," said David Scott, Carlsberg's head of on-trade customer marketing.

"The Sun has partnered with us and understands the aim of the promotion, to support British pubs and reward their readers, while encouraging them to go to the pub over the Bank Holiday weekend."

However, Liverpool fans have reacted furiously on fansites and messageboards at what is seen as betrayal from a company associated with the club for more than a decade.

"I am disgusted with this, it's made my blood boil. It is such a dissappointment and I think we should pull the plug on them and get them out ASAP," insisted one irate fan, while others traded information on locations to buy unsponsored shirts.

In April 1989 The Sun front page ran a story with the simple headline 'The Truth' claiming that during the Hillsborough disaster Liverpool supporters assaulted a police officer giving a fan the kiss of life, urinated on other officers and the bodies of fans and picked the pockets of victims. The Sun later described the article as, "the most terrible mistake in our history."

To this day, The Sun sells an estimated 50,000 fewer copies per day in the city.
