Default Sigma 28 F1.8 EX DG - any other choices?

Hey guys!
I'm looking for a walkaround prime for lower light use/general walkabout.

28mm works best for me as it's about 42mm after crop, so it's similar to my Canon QL17 and Minolta 7s. And I don't think I can afford the 28/1.4, should I even find one :P

I'd like to get some other 28mm AF suggestions - this was basically the only want I could find. My preference is to the sigma because of the faster stop, vs the nikon 28/2.8 - plus it's full frame so about a decade down when D700s go for cheap, I can make the upgrade

Also do not want the 30mm/1.4 from sigma - tried it, do not like it.

Finally, does anyone know how the IQ of the Sigma stacks up to the 17-55VR kit lens when stopped down to F8? Pretty pleased with the 17-55 for now, but would love something sharper

To be used on a D200.

Cheers!
