Default Help/advice needed for upcoming Melbourne trip

I will be in Melbourne next week for business & extending a few days during the weekend to explore the Great Ocean Drive.

    Need some advice on:
    - Budget hotel accommodation for Friday, Saturday & Sunday nights
    - Should I take a local tour package for the Great Ocean Drive? Or should I rent a car? Will likely to be traveling alone though
    - Any other tips/advice would be good

    Thanks in advance

first visit? alone? dun drive. go on a tour package. dun cost too much
budget hotel in melbourne city... not much. victoria hotel is cheap at 100+aussie. there is one at the end of swanston street near the flinder's station which is budget and not too bad. there are also some around at victoria mkt e.g. ymca.
have fun, absorb in the aussie culture.

fri sat sun, head out to vic mkt, crown casino swanston street, spencer street hmmm nitetime king street is pretty fun (imo).
o yah, if u heading to GOR, take a deal down to the grampians too. is on the way.

If going to the Great Ocean Road, I would recommend Go West http://www.gowest.com.au/

    Enjoy.

Thanks. I also found these websites http://www.wotif.com & http://www.hotelclub.com that helps filter the hotels.

Great Ocean Road is easy for self drive only if you are a competent driver.
Becareful, do not speed if you are taking the Great Ocean road from Geelong instead of the princes highway
Also watch out for traffic police, tons of them during weekends near to towns.

When I was in Melbourne, was crazy enough to self drive alone many times, including a 4 day Great Ocean Road to Grampians, to Naracoote Mt Gambier South Australia.
Pop in your GPS, stopover where-ever you want if you are into photography instead of those tours.

Spend at least 2 days if you wanna do the whole port campell national park.

    Places of interest
Tourquey - if you want photos of sufers
Anglesea - stopover for great coffee
Otways rainforest - good in early mornings otherwise it just looks like any other park
Port Campell : where the famous 12 apostles are
Warrnambool - use to be a whaling town, still able to whale watch

If you wanna spend 1 day to 12 Apostles, you can skip all those little coastal towns and take the Princes Freeway and cut through Camperdown to Great Ocean road
    Takes you less than 3-4hours.
