can macro lenses be used for general usage? or can they be only used for macro shots?

general usage also can.
a 50mm macro is ok for portraits, just as a 100mm macro works as a tele-zoom. Here is a shot from my sigma 50mm macro. ![]() |

Btw, you post in the wrong section already... and answer is yes.. you can use them for general purposes. I have recently done a shoot at Shape Run 2008 with a Tamron 90mm macro lens. So why not?
