Thread: UWA lens for 10D

    Default UWA lens for 10D

I am currently considering 2 UWA lens for my 10D as follows:

    1) Sigma 15-30mm f3.5-5.6
    2) Canon 17-40mm f4 L

The comments and reviews about the above 2 are good, especially the Canon. However, I have not seen any comparisons of the 2 side by side.

I like the Sigma for the 2 extra mm (3.2mm for 10D), sharpness at WA. Dislike it because huge and no suitable filter.

I like the Canon because it is f4 throughout, good build and weather-resistent. Maintain sharpness throughout. However, I lose the 2mm compared to Sigma.

Please note that I have not tested the lens, the likes/dislikes are based on extensive search in multiple forums and reviews.

My questions to you kind folks are:

    1) Should I be greedy on the 2mm since the prices of the 2 lenses are only USD100 different?

    2) Someone suggested I can technically "recover" the 2mm by taking shots a few steps back - Is this correct or is he pulling a fast one?

If anyone has done a comparison, with pics, on these 2, I would love to hear from you cos I need my UWA soon.......

    Cheers

    Canon bcoz:

    - L glass optics
    - Weather sealing in 17-40L
    - Better resale
    - No compatibility promblems w future bodies
    - USM - faster, quieter focussing

15mm is a lot wider than a 17mm, but a 24 is not drastically diff enough from a 27.2 to warrant missing out on the L.
