Thread: K100D Super vs K200D

    Default K100D Super vs K200D

Sigh, returned the DS cause it was not as new as it was claimed to be.

Now I am thinkng of getting either the K100D super or the K200D. I only shoot RAW, so I am wondering which to be the better option.

I loved the DS for the viewfinder, but then again, I remembered a long time ago when I compared the DS and the DL, there wasn't much difference and the DL was actually brighter. Will either of the above choices be a significant step down?

Another need that I have is less noise. I have read all about the 10MP sensor on the K10D and the K200D. Some people say that if you resize the 10MP to 6MP, the resulting noise levels can match that of the 6MP sensor, especially at ISO800. I just read a comment on dpreview forum that the 6MP sensor will always do better than the 10MP camera no matter what you do with the resultant file. Another school of thought is that if an image is exposed properly, there should not be too much noise. I don't quite subscribe to this notion as insufficient light means just that. I prefer underexposed images with less noise to begin with in PS.

K100D super slightly less than $900 at some places in Singapore and I think this is pretty high compared to the US. I have not checked out what K200D costs.

Refurbished DLs costs about USD299 before shipping on eBay.

Both cameras are good enough for most users. If you don't need the extra pixels, K100D Super or even K100D is good enough. K200D is quite a bit bigger than the K100D due to its weather sealed body. I know you are looking for a smaller body, this might be a factor too. Don't worry about the viewfinder, I put K100D and K20D side by side, the difference is very little.

There is a good condition K100D super for sale at the b&s forum right now, at a very decent price too

    Good luck.

Yes, it's a steal price, especially if it still has some warranty

Unfortunately the super has been reserved and no reply on the other.

There is another K100D. Longko has put up one for sales.

both are good, but very different

i'd wager for noise control, the k100d will still be better though, but i'm not sure. there aren't many samples on the internet to see.

    I upgraded from K100D to K200D.
The noise control on the K100D is better than the K200D if you compare a 100% crop.
If you don't need the 10mp and you can get a good saving(like more than $300) then go for the K100D.

yep, but i'm thinking that at similar size , i.e. resize k200d output to k100d 6 mgp dimensions,

they will not look too far apart

how about other factors like batt life? is the 200 really much better than the 100?

Batt life is much better. Can get nearly double the number of shots per charge.

I think the question is if it really can be done. It sounds about right theoretically. However, there is always the possibility that the 10MP sensor produces too much noise, maybe even blotchy noise, that downsizing will not not be enough to offset the increase in noise.

Think what nightmare bro said is resized K200D 3872x2592 (10MP) to K100D 3008x2008 (6MP). You should be able to see almost similar result out of K100D/s. One of the way I often used to reduce noise with K10D is to reduce the image size and it does helps.

Yeah, but this is theoretical. I guess if someone has both cameras, we can take some photos in a controlled environment to really see if it is true. Downsizing might reduce some of the noise, but will it really reduce that much noise to make the downsized image to be as good as that from the 6MP sensor? I really have no idea.

I have K100D (6MP) and K10D (10MP). And I'm telling u it does helps. Normally I'll be happy to do compare shots like how I always do in the past. But the K100D is packed inside nicely for reserved viewing tomorrow. MAYBE I'll take out later to take shots if u are so interested on the result.

    hrm,

downsizing will not reduce the noise out of cam, but noise is normally the most apparent at 100% crop.

if you think about it, when you resize a p&s output until it is 20 x 20 pixels, it will look good.

therefore, what i'm trying to say here is, 10 megapixels should give you more noise, but has the advantage of allowing you to retain detail if you need to crop. when i got my hands on the k20d i realised that quickly. if you are only going to make 8r or s8r prints, then i would not think that noise will be a great issue between the two of them.

if you are upgrading from a k100d upwards though, i will not hesitate to tell you, do not bother with k10d or k200d, go to k20d straight. but since you have not tried k100d yet, if price is an issue, i would say go for it. it is an able camera, and to be honest, unless you have a weather sealed lens, the weather sealed body is just a bonus on the side that is a good to have but not must have.

usually when it is raining, you will not get good pictures anyways - weather sealing is probably only a boon when travelling. like fengwei said the other day.. in singapore, if rain, just go back another time lor. the island so small anyways.

mm... The noise arose from squeezing too many pixels onto the same area and having the pixels smaller. This makes s/n ratio bad. If you set to 6MP on the 10MP K200D, you are merely telling the camera to process the smaller centre part of the CCD up to 6MP. The pixel density remains the same, hence noise performance should be the same. This is the same trick used on P&S cameras..at least that's what I read.

If stablised CCD not an issue, the old istDL is a good choice. Its very light and small and I owned it as my first DSLR. I would presume a second hand one with kit lens should be around $400-$500 these days assuming you can find someone willing to sell it.
I sold mine to a gentleman in Toa payoh sometime back and it may be time for him to upgrade...I suspect alot of people are keeping their istDL or DS at home because they think no one wants them as all salivating over the K100D super, K200D and K20D...
