    direct is acceptable.

Depending camera to camera, type of flash to type of flash. In general, bkgrd will usually be dark if use direct. The prize may also be washed out. But again for inexperienced users like you, u may have to use direct just to secure safe face shots.

As for shooting raw, matter of opinion. To be safe and inexperienced users like you, yes, use it. Be prepared to use plenty of cards though. Seldom use my company's D80 but if follow D70s, ISO shd not be above ISO 640.

Dun bother abt fanciful shots when u lack experience. All clear shd be your priority. F5.6 shd be the way. Big group shots if arrange in rows shd be at F7.1 if your boss intends to blow the pic big.

yes, you better shoot direct during award presentation, else your flash run out of juice before the ceremony over, beside, the last thing you want is blown your flash haft way during the shoot, Remember, photos with direct flash is far better than NO photos.

and also, if you shoot raw, you need to get big capacity CF card.

the group photos also go direct flash, you need smaller aperture, and bang a couple of shots, don't think that everyone will want to wait for your SB600 slowly recycle.

ok, direct flash it is plus lots of batteries.

Btw, the composition for prize presentation, is it better to go wider or narrower (the giver and recipient fills the frame)

Go slightly wider, then crop a bit as necessary. That way you won;t have to worry about chopping off hand, leg or body parts. You won't loose too much quality (if you're shooting in L jpegs highest quality) and besides, these would most likely end up being 4R prints at most, 8R or S8R.

yes shoot abut wider. then crop if needed. the group photo will most likely printed in s8r.
if they wanna print 8r, then tell them s8r better, else crop will be difficult. as u will most likely shoot the group in long formatt.
