Default Canon 17-40L or 17-55 IS

Has anyone here used both of these lenses and has comments or recommendations? I'm wondering... if you were to shoot during daylight at the same settings, which produces a better quality image?

F8 onwards (for landscape) prefer 17-40, produce more contrast and of course 17-40 is cheaper
