Either lens might not be fast enough for faster sports like skateboarding. Maybe for rockclimbing, should be okay.

18-200 gives you the flexibility, wide zoom range is useful.

17-70 has f/2.8 only at 17-19mm, but has the advantage if you wish to take close-ups as it has a very good close-focusing capability.

One of the factors you have to consider is the weight of the 18-200mm. The weight is 610gms. Add this to the camera and it might be a little on the heavy side for rock climbing shooting. Like what most members will say, go try it and get a feel of it before you buy any lens. Have fun

Ah, for a general walkabout lens, I'd recommend the 18-200 without a doubt. Flexible and convenient. Changing lens is such a hassle!

it depends, both are versatile in their own right.

do you really require 70-200 range? sometimes having a wider zoom range is not anything if you do not like a telephoto perspective. the 17-70 tends to be sharper, and also gives you the liberty to focus closer.

18-200 is more of a "travel" lens, for the times when you need a wide zoom range quickly.

frankly, if you are doing sports, i see no reason for any wide-angle inclusion. you will need the length most of the time, as well as a certain amount of speed, i.e. fast lenses with huge maximum apertures.
