Usually for scenery a wide angle lens is prefered. The 18-55 offers u versatility, howver i dont quite understand u high speed question. U can up ur shutter speed. Low light however a flash is recommended.
That is my 2cents, as they say..

If you're travelling, get the 18-55mm IS. It's much more versatile. You won't get the big aperture of the 50mm 1.8, and optically it is nowhere close, but it will be so much more useful when you are travelling. Of course, both are fairly small and inexpensive lenses, so you could just get both.

For travelling, i think the 18-55 would be better. You will likely need some wide angles and 50mm is too tele already.
I think both lenses are not really suitable for most sports. Reach is probably not enough if you need to shoot from a distance. |

Get both.. 18-55 for landscape during daytime and the nifty fifty during night to shoot things like your dinner etc. And bring a tripod for shooting night scenery.

is the 50mm good for slight portrait photos in low light? or just random photos under low light?

18-55 IS , great for general walkaround, most of the time u will be using this in travels.
50 1.8II, great for portraits, lowlight condition (indoor etc) night scenary, 18-55 and Tripod is all u need, better if you have a cable release. night portrait, 50 1.8 or 18-55 and tripod + flash, external flash is important if you have a bigger budget. for sports, this 2 lens are too short to reach. you will need a tele lens, a cheap one like 55-250 is good enough for starters. and hey all this sounds like what i have. ahaha have fun with your holidays. be sure to research more and practice more shoots so u wont end up with disappointed photos from your holiday. I spend an entire one month to practice shooting before i went on my holidays last month after i brought my camera 2 months back ![]() what i will stress that tripod is extremely important to capture good shots, good lens just enhance your photos.
