50mm f1.4 = Better Built + USM
50mm f1.8 = Mainly Plastic body.... No USM Hope this helps..... |

Are you sure the 1.4 is not as sharp or you focus it on the wrong thing, remmeber that the dof is narrower with the 1.4 wide open than with a 1.8 wide open.

i read in reviews that actually from f/2.8 - f/8 onwards all the 3 50mm lens are similar/if not the same in image quality. the real difference is the CA, bokeh, distortion @ f1.2-f1.8. frankly speaking, f1.8 feels like a toy lens when mounted as it's too plasticky.. go for f1.4 if you are into portrait taking the extra bokeh will be appreciated.

but if you're wondering which to get between the two, i'd suggest the f1.8. doesnt focus fast, alil noisy but it works well for me. hey, its afterall one of, if not, the cheapest lens around man!

If I can't feel the difference, then I will just get the f1.8 lens. That's how I look at things...

actually the difference comes in when you are a professional photographer, where people are looking to buy your photos. no point if you are investing in it if it's purely a hobby, with the exception of a fat wallet...

On 1.6 crop cameras, the 50 1.8 is more than enough. However, if you've got a fullframe, 50mm f/1.4 would be great as a normal walkaround.

Canon's pricing is usually more based on aperture that makes the difference.

When I had the 50mm 1.8 I always had to be gentle with it... it's poor build didn't inspire any confidence, frequent reports here on CS about 50mm 1.8s breaking in to 2 didn't help either... so much so that i decided to sell it after 2-3 months of owning (luckily I bought it 2nd hand so I didn't lose anything when I sold it).... for this alone I feel it justifies the price diff...

Because the 1.4 performs better than the 1.8 at higher apertures, say 2.8 or so. Build quality and focusing also plays a part in the price difference.

Seriously, the 50 f/1.4 is really a very good lens. Fast and sharp. Bokeh is nice. Feels more solid in my hands. I sold my 1.8 within 2 weeks and got myself the 1.4. No regrets.

I was debating between the 1.4 and 1.8 myself as well. IMO if you consider yourself a hobbyist you probably would have that urge to upgrade to the 1.4 eventually. I figured I would and decided to 'save' the $130 I would have spent on the 1.8 and went straight for the 1.4
A must have lens for your low light shots. |
